Expert Analysis

Mooney flat out knows how to play the game of basketball and has an IQ for the game well past his years. He scored using his in-between game, getting downhill on the attack, and from beyond the three point line. Mooney connected with his teammates on more than several occasions and had a his fair share of assists. I like how he seems to never get flustered and never rushes into a decision and if the play isn’t there he kicks it to a teammate.

The top point guard we saw in the 16U division was Mooney, who continued to prove his value as a scoring option across both of our evaluations in Richmond. The sophomore is a confident shot maker and a creative finisher in the paint, with the ability to get past defenders and generate opportunities for his teammates. He plays with a high basketball IQ, consistently makes the right reads, and shows strong command of the offense. Mooney’s blend of scoring, playmaking, and decision making points to a very bright future as a lead guard.

Mooney was in full scoring mode this weekend. Playing with Rockit MHC, he showed why he’s one of the more dangerous offensive guards in the 2028 class.
He averaged 20 points per game. He scored from everywhere—off the dribble, from deep, and in rhythm within the offense. But what separated him was his playmaking. When defenses keyed in, he made the right reads and kept others involved.
Rockit MHC went 2-1 against strong competition, and Mooney was at the center of it. Heading into next high school season, he’s a name that’s going to start popping up a lot more.

Mooney might not be under the radar much longer. Flat out, he’s one of the most natural scorers in the area—regardless of class. The combination of shooting, handle, and pace makes him tough to deal with for any defender.
He’s a high-level shooter, both off the catch and off the dribble, and he’s comfortable taking (and making) tough shots. His handle is tight, and he plays with a rhythm that keeps defenders guessing. It always looks like the ball is on a string when he’s operating, especially in space.
Where he separates himself is how he uses his quickness. He’s not just fast—he knows how to change speeds, get defenders off balance, and create angles. That allows him to get downhill and finish, even through contact, despite not having overwhelming size.
He’s also more than just a scorer. Mooney can create for others when defenses collapse. As his role continues to grow at Collegiate, his playmaking should take another step forward.
Heading into next season, expect his name to come up more and more. If the production matches the trajectory, he will be a highly sought-after guard. This applies to the 2028 class locally and beyond.
