Mooney is one of the most fun guards to watch in the Richmond area, as he’s not only super skilled and very smart, but even in a showcase atmosphere he played with a ton of toughness and treated every possession like it the final minutes of a state championship. He’s very shifty off the bounce with good change of speeds and good burst to get in the lane, despite not being the biggest he was very good finishing around the rim through contact, he made shots from multiple levels, involved his teammates, and was always the first one to hit the floor and fight for loose balls.

Danny made the right plays for his team, whether setting them up in the half-court or finding open guys in transition or off drive-and-kick scenarios. He will be among the top players in the region this year for Collegiate, and I fully expect his recruitment to skyrocket.

He is a capable perimeter shot maker who has the quickness to get by defenders and is a creative finisher in the paint. Mooney sees the floor well, consistently finds open teammates and does a good job making the right reads when the defense collapses.

Mooney thrives in the open floor, turning defense into offense and capitalizing on fast-break opportunities whenever they present themselves. Once he gets a head of steam, he is incredibly difficult to stop, attacking the rim with confidence and purpose. Offensively, he plays with tremendous swagger and has no hesitation pulling up from well beyond the three-point line, making him a threat the moment he crosses half court. His energetic motor is contagious, igniting his teammates and raising the intensity level on both ends of the floor. I also like the emotion and passion he plays with, wearing his heart on his sleeve every time he steps onto the court. Mooney does an excellent job drawing fouls and getting to the free-throw line, though improving his consistency at the stripe would help maximize his scoring output, as he left a few easy points on the board.

Another prospect who helped himself last weekend was Mooney. The heady lead guard is a shot maker and a creative finisher in the paint. He quick enough to get by defenders, sees the floor and can find open teammates. He has a good command of the basketball and is trending up in the 2028 recruiting class.

Mooney is an efficient scorer who combines advanced ball-handling with a high basketball IQ. What separates him from many guards his age is his ability to control tempo. He changes speeds exceptionally well, keeps defenders off balance, and consistently makes the right read when attacking. Whether he’s creating his own shot or setting up teammates, he impacts the game in a variety of ways.

His 41-point performance against St. Christopher’s last season showcased just how dangerous he can be when he gets rolling offensively. Currently ranked No. 21 overall in Virginia and the No. 6 point guard in the class, Mooney looks primed for a breakout sophomore campaign and should continue to establish himself as one of the state’s top floor generals.

Mooney flat out knows how to play the game of basketball and has an IQ for the game well past his years.
