Excels as a movement shooter, with college ready range. Looks well drilled and trained when coming off screens and smoothly getting into deep triples. Shooting provides a core part of his DNA, while also working on the rest of guard abilities. Has good balance and touch on drives, scoring on runners and similar moves that allow him to get off his shots when attacking the teeth of his defense. Has some combo guard potential based on that and other skill development. But sharpshooting from three will likely always be his calling card. Which is a very good thing as colleges always wants shooters.

Second time watching Rutherford this month, this time he was dialed in from distance. Hitting five threes in a season opening win. Most of them came via spot up hits, but did confidently drill a pull up in translation. Pure shooter, the net and rim seemed to barely move on his swishes. Intriguing sophomore, already off to an impressive November start.

Took on a good bit of the ball handling duties for his Pioneer team and impressed with his snaking dribbles to the rim. Euro steps and tight handles allowed him to split defenders on those drives. Bought in on the defensive end, getting on the floor for loose balls and quickly passing to teammates. Previously had scouted the Pioneer as more of a two guard. Liked seeing the all around improvements he’s making. Rutherford impressed during 15U AAU and camp play, setting the stage for a potential breakout sophomore campaign.

Rutherford can fill it up from three with a silky jumper. But he’s not content with just being a shooter who floats around the perimeter. He mixes it up as a defender by being smart in the passing lanes. And perhaps most importantly, he’s already a talker on the court. There’s tons of kids all over the region who can shot the rock like Rutherford. But cool and quiet will get you beat, especially in college. While Rutherford plays cool, he’s anything but quiet on the court.

A dynamic 6’1” guard with deep-range shooting ability, Rutherford made his scoring presence felt in multiple ways. His pull-up jumper off the bounce, especially from beyond the arc was a constant weapon. Whether in rhythm or off quick reads, he punished defenders for giving him space, stretching the floor and keeping closeouts honest.

His ability to pass, relocate, and exploit gaps in zone defenses made him a constant off-ball threat. Possessed a convincing shot fake and aggressive side-step dribble against closeouts. What made him even more valuable was his high-level two-way versatility, able to switch across three positions defensively. With his smooth mechanics, deep range, and basketball IQ, Rutherford stretched defenses thin and punished slow rotations with surgical precision.
