for the Wichita Heights Falcons tonight was just too big and too long. His ability to guard on the perimeter at the top of the key in a zone and still dominate the middle of the court was just too much for the Pioneers. Had several blocks in tonight’s contest and sparked an early route of the Pioneers by catching an early lob dunk after a spin-off from his defender. The play was clearly drawn up by Falcons head coach Joe Auer or at least it’s one of their most run plays as the Pioneers seemed to have noticed it early as well, but they still just couldn’t stop it. At Amalachi’s size and build, he has the ability to play all 5 positions defensively if he decided to. He jumps easy and effortlessly, in fact, when he dunks it doesn’t seem like he is even loading up on his lift off, he has just natural athleticism. What makes Amalachi a wise guy is that he truly seems more engaged defensively as far as his interest. Offense seems to bore him a little, like dunking and put backs is too easy for him.

Wilkins averaged nearly 2.5 blocks a game last season and is likely to keep up his pace this year. He’s a versatile defender who protects the rim in a variety of ways. His length and athleticism allow him to block shots as a help defender. He is also strong enough to wall up post players and time a blocked shot.

While there are plenty of great athletes across the state, we’re always going to start lists of athletes with Wilkins. This guy has an incredible combination of length, raw strength and explosiveness. He covers the court with his long strides, soars through the air either on the run or from a standing jump, and has great reach with long arms. He’s thin, but impressively strong, with a chiseled upper body and powerful legs.

Center, #4 Overall:
Wilkins doesn’t get all the press, but we will continue to put him near the top of every list. He’s the most dominant athlete in the state. He’s got great length, even greater explosiveness, and a fierce competitiveness. It will be interesting to see how he evolves as the senior leader of the Falcons. Having played in the 6A title game the past three years, Wilkins has experienced more big games than any junior in the state.
