Ward won the game for Huber Heights Wayne with a layup with under five seconds left to turn a one point deficit into a one point lead. Coming alive in the second half, Ward did a nice job making himself available against the zone and his teammates found him in positions to score. Credit to Ward who got better as the game went on and had some huge plays down the stretch to lift his team to victory.
A prospect who keeps getting better, Ward is going to be a key piece for a Huber Heights Wayne squad that has a nice blend of seniors and young pieces. The GWOC is always one of the most competitive leagues in the state and this season should be no different as a majority of teams in the league have prospects that will play at the college level. Ward II has the size and physicality to make an impact in the paint and was another player who impressed at the Lima Mega Scrimmage from this article.
An under the radar small college forward target, Ward had a couple blocked shots, rebounded the ball well and made an impact outside of scoring that’s going to be needed for Huber Heights Wayne this season. That interior production is valuable as I expect a lot of close games in the GWOC this season and those hidden possessions that a strong big can gain could swing the results of a few games this year. Ward has taken visits to Otterbein, Wilmington and Ohio Northern, becoming a priority for small college programs across the state
He will be running with Midwest Flyers in Indy. Ward is a 4/5 but is unique as he can step away from the hoop and do work. As a strong player, he has a soft shot with good feet. When he has to defend on the perimeter, Alphonso does a solid job and switches effectively. He runs the floor well and rebounds like an animal. Ward is averaging around 8 ppg and 5 rpg.

One of the more impressive big men at the Grit Region Finals, this 6’7″ center from Wayne High School in Ohio really stood out for his Midwest Flyers – Levett team. Ward II spaced the floor for a corner three-point shot, hit another trailing the play in transition, and was a consistent finisher around the basket using his size, strength, and physicality. He can definitely find a home at the next level.
We had a lot of size in attendance at the Expo and Ward one battling all afternoon with some other very talented centers. I thought Ward was active at the rim on both ends as a roll man, rebounder and rim protector. Ward even flashed a couple mid-range and 3-point shots as well. Solid performance from Ward who didn’t have to make any flashy plays to be effective.
