I was looking forward to seeing some great players in the class of 2021 this spring and summer. Let’s take a look at some of the 1-on-1 matchups from the seniors to be that I hoped to see during grassroots season.
Peter Nwoke Peter Nwoke 6'8" | PF Orchard Lake St. Mary's | 2020 GA (2021, PF, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s)
vs.
Nate Claerbaut Nate Claerbaut 6'10" | C Zeeland East | 2021 State MI (2021, C, Zeeland East)
I really wanted to see these 2 post players run into each other. In my opinion, both have D1 potential. Nwoke is higher ranked, but Clearbaut is gaining steam as a player and prospect. I wanted to see Nwoke bang with Claerbaut, and on the other side, see Claerbaut deal with Nowke’s athletic defense and finishing ability.
Julian Lewis Julian Lewis 6'5" | SG Ann Arbor Huron | 2021 State MI (2021, SG, Ann Arbor Huron)
vs.
Blake Lund Blake Lund 6'1" | CG Linden | 2021 State MI (2021, CG, Linden)
This would be a great matchup between 2 of the top perimeter prospects in Michigan. If you get down to the nuts and bolts, they are eerily similar. Lund and Lewis are both excellent scorers, with Lund lighting it up from deep and Lewis creating opportunities. But both make defense a priority, which is what would make this a classic matchup.
Jayden Nunn Jayden Nunn 6'2" | PG Dream City Christian | 2021 State AZ (2021, SG, Flint Carman-Ainsworth)
vs.
Colin Weber Colin Weber 6'5" | CG Hopkins | 2021 State MI (2021, CG, Hopkins)
This may seem like an odd combination, but there’s a method to my madness here. Nunn is a D1 talent. He’s an athletic scorer that can run the floor and get good looks in transition. I want to see how Weber stacks up. I believe he can guard in the open floor and facilitate against top notch talent, and I have a feeling I’ll be having this same discussion with coaches at the next level.
Chris Cayton Chris Cayton 5'11" | PG Ann Arbor Skyline | 2021 State MI (2021, PG, Ann Arbor Skyline)
vs.
Linden Holder Linden Holder 6'0" | PG De La Salle | 2021 State MI (2021, PG, De La Salle)
This is a selfish choice, because I just like watching these 2 play. They are 2 of the most underrated players in the class. Both of these floor generals have excellent handles. They can both score when necessary, but can also make sure their teammates get theirs. Cayton and Holder really start to shine as the game winds down. They demand the ball more late in the game and are effective in doing so.
