Recruiting Report: Myles Martinez (2019)

Watching <strong>Myles Martinez</strong> (2019), a 6’6” post player from Centennial High School, you can tell he plays multiple sports. There’s something in his somewhat unorthodox movements and footwork in the post that is striking. “The best part of my game, I know a lot of moves and stuff like that, to get around the defender. Knowing where the defender is, and like, being able to work based off of his location,” Martinez said. While the sophomore is most effective as an interior scorer, the form on his jump shot is rather pure. So when Martinez says he bases his move on the defender’s location, the opponent can’t simply lay off. “I can also spot-up shoot. If the defender backs up off me, I’m able to turn around and shoot that mid-range or shoot that close jumper,” Martinez said. His range is anywhere within the arch. The package of great feet and size will be welcomed at the college level, but the lefty may also be recruited as a pitcher in baseball. Currently he's playing golf for Centennial, and played varsity soccer last year. As far as basketball goes, Martinez said he’s been in contact with Kentucky State. Given his smooth jumper and notable coordination as a 6’6” sophomore, it will be intriguing to see if Martinez remains a post player throughout his basketball career. Whether it happens in AAU, high school, or once he graduates and heads to college, <em>PHOH </em>believes he will be eventually experiment with the perimeter. During our phone interview, Martinez speculated on the chances of being asked to play out on the wing in college. “I think I can play power forward, or even stretch-4. Just depends on what division. I feel like I have very good potential of being a good power forward. But I can also, depending on how much I work on my shot, I could end up being that 3-man,” Martinez said. What is the 4.0 GPA student looking for in a school? “I think a school not too big or not too small. I think I want to be in sports management or business, so a school with a good major in that would be very nice,” Martinez said. Martinez is one of the most interesting sophomores in Ohio. It’s hard to project which divisional level he will end up at. However, it’s clear that Martinez possesses everything a college is looking for in a new-age big man. As he continues to add physical strength, there’s not too many players who can matchup with Martinez — he will run the floor very well, has a series of post moves, and will knock down jumpers if you give him space. I would assume that lengthy wings will draw the task for now, but he’s eventually going to be the most physically intimidating player on most courts. In the meantime, those interested can catch Martinez in the Ohio Hoopsters’ Fall League at New Covenant, which runs through October 30.
