STATE TOURNAMENT: Class 4A Recaps
Semifinal #2: #6 Ankeny 71, #2 Cedar Falls 57
Sixth-seeded Ankeny came out on fire, opening the game on a 13-2 run and outscoring second-seed Cedar Falls 27-9 in the opening quarter en route to a 71-57 win. The win sets up an all-CIML championship game, with the Hawks taking on Waukee on Friday night.
The Hawks made six 3-pointers in the first eight minutes and were never really in danger. They opened up a 20-point lead early in the second quarter. Cedar Falls went on a 14-0 run to close to within six, but the Hawks scored the final five points of the half, taking a 35-24 lead into the locker rooms. The lead ballooned back up to 20 near the end of the third quarter and they cruised throughout the fourth quarter to the win, continuing their fantastic run in Des Moines.

He’s headed to Minnesota State Morehead to play football (wide receiver), but he was on fire in this one and made half of Ankeny’s 12 3s.

Quarterfinal #2: #1 Ankeny Centennial 53, #8 Davenport North 51
Top-seeded Ankeny Centennial got all they wanted, and more, from a feisty Davenport North team on Tuesday night, escaping with a 53-51 quarterfinal win to advance to Thursday’s semifinal against Waukee.
Centennial was in control for most of the night, leading for over 80% of the contest, but could never quite put away the Wildcats. It looked like they might have finally started to deal the final blow early in the fourth quarter, when they built a nine-point lead, 45-36. But North slowly chipped away, using an attack that was thriving on getting into the paint and finding an open cutter. After Jaron Crews split his free throws with 8 seconds left, Mahki Jacobs got off a quality look at a game-winner at the horn that hit the front of the iron and fell off. Centennial survives, and lives to see another day.

North’s season ends with a 16-9 record, and the school’s first state tournament appearance since 2003. The Wildcats, despite having no regular taller than 6-5, held a 32-20 edge in points in the paint, and they’ll return four starters from this group. New coach Marc Polite has this program headed in the right direction, and they should be a real threat next year. They were led by Jayden Houston Jayden Houston 6'3" | SF Davenport North | 2021 State IA , who had a game-high 22 points on 10-15 shooting. MVP: Jayden Houston Jayden Houston 6'3" | SF Davenport North | 2021 State IA (North) — 22 points (10-15 FG, 2-3 FT), 4 rebounds
For the first time in the tournament, we’re giving the MVP nod to a player from the losing team. Houston, a 6-2 wing built like a running back, was fantastic in this one, routinely getting to the rim and finishing against much bigger defenders. Had he not missed 9 minutes due to foul trouble in the first half, North may have won this one.

Quarterfinal #1: #4 Waukee 58, #5 North Scott 50
Waukee spent a good portion of the season atop the rankings in 4A, and they showed why on Tuesday night, leading wire-to-wire in their 58-50 quarterfinal win over North Scott. They advance to the semifinals, where they’ll face either Ankeny Centennial or Davenport North.
A team blessed with a starting lineup that goes 6-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-7 and 6-6, and has four kids who have made at least 46 3s on the year, with each of them above 46% to boot, Waukee is extremely difficult to defend. They showed off their shooting prowess in this one, finishing 10-19 (52.6%) from behind the arc in the win.
That’s not to say the Warriors won without a little bit of a scare. After building a lead as big as 15, 35-20, midway through the third quarter, it looked like they’d cruise to a 20-point victory.
