What a quarterfinal round we saw from the South Jersey Group 1 bracket. No. 9 Gloucester upset top-seeded Overbrook. No. 5 Lindenwold beat No. 4 Pitman and No. 6 Wildwood dominated No. 3 Woodstown. This is another case where lower seeds keep advancing. This seems to be a trend around the state. No one can complain about witnessing that. Here are the top performers from the quarterfinal round.
Steven Light (2022) | Gloucester
The sophomore took over for Gloucester in their upset of No. 1 Overbrook. He finished with a game-high 22 points. They needed a big fourth quarter to complete the comeback and it was highlighted by some late free throws by Light. He finished with 10 made free throws. Gloucester now has a legit chance to win this bracket led by their sophomore sensation.
Jason Pino (2021) | Gloucester
Pino was the big man down low controlling the boards. He notched a double-double in the win with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He did not stray out near the three-point line because he did not need to. Pino scored all of his points from close range which means he was comfortable all game long. Pino and Light could be a dangerous combination moving forward.
Eriq Campbell (2021) | Lindenwold
There was only one choice for player of the game when Lindenwold upset No. 4 Pitman. Campbell dominated from the beginning. He finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and four steals. He was able to ice the game late with some free throws. Campbell was scoring from all over the floor against Pitman. With a player of his caliber, Lindenwold will be a tough out.
Diante Miles (2021) | Wildwood
Miles was red hot in the upset victory over Woodstown. He filled up the state sheet in many ways. Miles finished with 36 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and six steals. He knocked down six free throws and an impressive six three-pointers. Miles has been Wildwood’s top option all season long and it showed in this one. That will have to continue if they want to pull off another upset in the semi-final.
Karl Brown (2020) | Wildwood
Brown was another player to score 20 points for Wildwood. He also had seven rebounds and four assists. Wildwood scored 101 points to their entire team was on. Omarian McNeal was another top performer with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists.
Kavon Lewis Kavon Lewis 5'9" | PG Penns Grove | 2020 State NJ (2020) | Penns Grove
This is no surprise. Penns Grove led 68-33 after a 33-9 third quarter. Lewis was the catalyst all night long. He scored a game-high 27 points and added three rebounds, five assists, and three steals. With the top-seed out, Penns Grove is the highest seed left at No. 2. To avoid an upset, they will need Lewis to continue to be the star.
