The Central Coast Section Boys Open Division Championships got underway last night at Santa Clara High School. The quarterfinals, two games were on the schedule. The top seed Archbishop Mitty took on 8th seeded Menlo in the first game, and 3 seed Bellarmine Bells took on number 6 Sacred Heart Prep in the second game of the night. It was the WCAL versus the West Bay League.

Archbishop Mitty (20-4) Defeats Menlo (20-4) 69-38

The Monarchs have decided that starting five guys at 6'3 and two bigs 6'7 and 6'9 coming off the bench is the best formula for their continued success. The Monarchs got off to a good start, moving the ball, attacking the paint, and making open shots. Mitty was led by 6'3 unsigned 2020 guard Marcus Greene with 16 pts, 5 rebounds. He's a Sr, and it's the playoffs. He was locked in last night driving to the basket through contact, and playing hounding defense on anybody bringing the ball up court. Nigel Burris 6'7 2021 forward also had a good game. He seemed to be more active than in previous games, scoring 20 points and grabbing 7 rebounds off the bench. He had some success finishing drives to the basket, and in transition including a dunk. Menlo put up a good effort, but couldn't keep up with the hot shooting Monarchs, and their guard play. Cole Kastner Menlo's 6'7 Sr leader was double teamed most of the game, he managed to score 10 pts, and grab 5 rebounds. Chris Cook a 6'7 2021 forward Menlo came off the bench to force Mitty to make adjustment in the early going. He's a prospect to keep an eye on. He scored 8 point and grabbed 4 rebounds.

Bellarmine (21-3) WCAL, Defeats Sacred Heart Prep (21-3) 59-43

The Bells had 4 starters to score in double digits. led by new starter Anthony Piro 5'11 Sr, at one point Piro was 3/3 from from three in the first quarter. He finished the night 5/8 from 3fga and was the games leading scorer with 17 points. The Bells Ryan Kiachian 6'9 2021 forward scored 12 points, and grabbed 5 rebounds along with two dunks as the Bells had success going to him early in the contest. He's been a consistent player for the Bells all season. The other starters who scored in double figures were unsigned Sr Ian Elam 6'6 forward who scored 10 points and grabbed a game high 7 rebounds and unsigned Sr Quinn Denker the 6'3 guard, and teams leading scorer seemed intent on getting others involved in the game. He knocked down key buckets as SHP tried to make a run. He finished with 11 points, 5 assists.

The other quarterfinal games

St Francis 14-10, (WCAL) 7 seed upset Archbishop Riordan 20-4, (WCAL) 2 seed 66-60

The young Lancers were led by Harland Banks 6'1 2022 guard, 23 pts and 8/8 from the free throw line.

Vince Barringer 6'5 2022 forward, 15 pts, 5/8 from 3 point land.

Isaiah Kerr, a rising 6'2 2022 guard, 11 pts.

Riordan was led by it's two Division I guards. Bryce Monroe 5'10 guard (Sam Houston State) 24 pts, and Je' Lani Clark 6'3 guard (Nevada) 13 pts.

Menlo Atherton 4 seed took down Serra 5 seed (WCAL), 45-43 in O.T

Skyler Thomas 6'3 2021 Menlo Atherton stood out with 19 points, and J.D Carson 60 2020 Menlo Atherton had 11pts.

Ryan Wilson 5'11 2020 guard Serra 14 pts, and Antonio Abeyta 5'11 2020 guard Serra chipped in with 8.
