DJ Fairley, Hoover: DJ was pivotal at keeping Spain Park’s Cameron Crawford in check during the first half. He denied post entry and worked his tail off to keep Cam from doing his thing. DJ was able to attack and finish with a strong left over the long arms of the defenders. He had another good drive along the baseline and able to stop with a soft floater, a difficult shot to finish. He showed his ability to spread the floor and step outside knocking down a big three. He finished with 9 points leading the Bucs.
Chip Culpepper, Hoover: Chip quietly scored 9 points. Early in the game, he wanted to dunk all over someone but was forced to adapt his shot in midair. During a pick and roll switch, he got the smaller defender on him and instinctively took his guy to the post. Smart players are constantly aware and he knew he had an advantage. Unfortunately, his teammates did not recognize the switch. Chip then needs to demand the ball and exploit the mismatch.
Brodin Grady, Hoover: Brodin quietly did his thing for the Bucs. He was great at finding his spot on the post and putting the defender on his back. At 6’4″, he showed some good variety in his game by shooting the corner three pointer confidently. Being a big that can shoot the three makes yourself harder to guard, but it also spaces the floor better for your slashing guards to get easier buckets. To improve, Brodin needs to use that ability to get his spot and add a variety of confident post moves. Then add that in with the ability to shoot and he’s suddenly a dynamic player on the court.
Braden Diclemente, Spain Park: Braden kept the Jaguars in the game in the first quarter. He had a good drive on the baseline and finished through the contact. Later, he had a big drive and finished through the foul. He had a good stop and pop on a midrange and kept the Jags in it while his other teammates waited to show up.
Joshua Harrington, Spain Park: Joshua struggled early. It seemed he wanted to force and attack the basket. For someone his size, that’s difficult to do against the bigger, stronger defenders. But in the second quarter, he got going. He hit two big threes that electrified the crowd. This started drawing more attention to him and opened up his floor. He was then able to drive and attack and drive and kick to his open teammates. He finished with 9 points.
Cameron Crawford, Spain Park: Cameron struggled early on against Hoover. He had a scoreless first half and received a lot of focus from the defense. It clearly frustrated him and at the start of the third he started to force the ball and shoot wild shots. Luckily, with 5:00 to go in the third, he finally got on the board. He finished off with 12 points for the game. As the area tournament approaches, his team will need him to step up and play big. When he’s struggling, he needs to find something that gets him going. He showed that by making a big chase down block on defense and continuing to attack.
