The top ranked player in the 2017 class, McCaffery will be asked to take on an even bigger scoring role this season after leading the Trojans in scoring last year. He showed during some team camps over the summer that it’s a task he looks capable of handling. The Iowa commit impacts the game in a number of ways, is a phenomenal passer and his shot has improved tremendously over the course of his career. The front runner for Mr. Basketball, look for McCaffery to end his high school career in a big way.
First Team
2017 Connor McCaffery, Iowa City West (15.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 2.6-to-1 assist-to-turnover, 1.4 steals)
The frontrunner for Mr. Basketball, McCaffery led the Trojans in scoring and assists, and was second in rebounding. A strong lead guard who takes care of the ball, he’s set to have a massive year for a West team that we’ve got ranked No. 1 in 4A to start the season.
2017 Devontae Lane, Iowa City West (13.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.9 steals)
The second ranked player in the 2017 class, behind only his teammate McCaffery, Lane is a dynamic player on both ends of the floor. He’s one of the state’s better perimeter defenders, and he’s a big-time scorer when he gets going. A big, strong guard, Lane should have a huge senior season.
2018 Matthew Mims, Cedar Rapids Xavier (12.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.3 steals, 46.4 FG%, 37.6 3P%, 80.5 FT%)
The junior point guard was sensational late last year, and his play at the state tournament, where he helped lead Xavier to the 3A title, helped land him a North Dakota offer. He’s a cerebral player who just keeps getting better and better, and he’ll be the focal point on the perimeter for a Saints team favored to repeat.
2017 Max Techau, Cedar Rapids Xavier (13.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, 60.4 FG%)
An athletic big man who runs the floor extremely well, Techau’s game has steadily improved since he was a freshman at Kennedy. He’s long, mobile and he finishes well at the rim, while also impacting the game on the defensive end. He’s worked to improve his range and should have a huge senior eyar.
2019 Patrick McCaffery, Iowa City West (4.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.0 blocks, 50.0 FG%)
A long, athletic wing, McCaffery is our top ranked player in the 2019 class. He had his ups-and-downs as a freshman, at times looking uncomfortable coming off the bench. But in a pair of starts, he averaged 12.5 points a game on 53% shooting. With him in the starting lineup, and a good amount of production to replace, look for his numbers to skyrocket as a sophomore.
