John Barranco, Vestavia Hills: John was the court general for the Rebels tonight. He seemed to model the style of LA Lakers guard, Rajon Rondo. He was very good with directing the offense from the top of the key. He could get in the lane and was very crafty with his ball fakes and shot fakes. He had quick hands on defense getting steals and deflections. He shoots well from anywhere on the court, but reluctantly. When he would drive he could separate by using an effective hop step. Sometimes he gets a little too risky on offense and tries a little too hard.
Davis Holbert, Vestavia Hills: Davis was a good shooter for Vestavia. He looked to shoot and shot well. He played well off of John, whenever he would drive, being able to relocate to the corner to get a shot off. He even showed the ability to drive and stop on a dime for a runner over the taller defenders.
Colby Jones, Mountain Brook: Colby is the PrepHoops #1 player in the state of Alabama and committed to play for Xavier next year. He clearly showed that he was the best player on the floor from the start of the game. He was doubled immediately on the very first possession. The entire Mountain Brook offense went through him. He is an effortless passer, being able to pass anywhere around the court. At the end of the first quarter, he hit a beautiful fall-away one-legged jumper as time expired. He is great at getting to the free throw line and capitalizing on it. As good as he is, though, he can be stopped. Vestavia tried to shut him down with double teams, but often picked him up at half court and he was able to exploit them because of his athleticism. What really makes Mountain Brook great is not Colby Jones, but the immense amount of discipline and shooters around him.
Holt Bashinsky, Mountain Brook: Holt was an extremely good shooter. He made four triples throughout the game and was a great target for Colby off the dribble. Holt was extremely good at passing and made smart passes. Some of those included difficult post-entry passes from the perimeter. He drove baseline and was able to dish out to the wing, cross-court, effectively. Many players will telegraph their passes or force a turnover because they cannot adapt their original attack, but not Holt.
Robert Haley, Mountain Brook: Robert was a big spark in the second half. To start the half, he hit a big corner three pointer and followed it up with a big block from behind the next possession. The next two possessions he came up with big steals. He hustles all over the court and was a nuisance on the defensive end. He had a beautiful spin move to his right hand, but could not finish the layup. Every team needs the hustle player and Robert brought a great spark.
On Tuesday, Mountain Brook will play Hewitt-Trussville and Vestavia will play Spain Park.
