Frey has transformed his game over the past three seasons, from a trigger-happy shooting guard, to what he is now: a combo-guard with point guard capabilities.
“Improvements I’ve seen are ball-handling and getting my shot down, and then working on my defense. That’s what my coach told me would keep me on the floor this year, so that’s what I’ve been working on,” said Frey.
“With Turner Scott graduating, Coach (BJ) Windhorst really wanted me to step-up and take over the one position, and lead the team and get us into the offense.”
Frey was splitting time at the point guard position with several other guards during the Drake Team Camp in June. And it was clear that though there may be no Turner Scott — at least immediately — waiting in the wings for Valley, they have a stable of capable guards that can take the reins.
In addition to playing with Valley in a slew of team camps this June, Frey was busy honing his point guard skills with Iowa Elite, and then Team Iowa later in the summer.
“I thought I played well,” said Frey. “I like playing with Elite, but once I switched over to Team Iowa I thought I played with more confidence, and I just liked playing with that group.”
Now he shifts his focus to his junior season with the Tigers, and Frey is a confident floor-general, who is looking to produce greatly, and lead too.
“Windhorst wants me to take over the one position and make sure we’re in offensive sets and stuff like that. But he also sees me as a team leader, and wanting the guys to group around me,” said Frey.
“We’re shooting to get back to Wells Fargo (Arena). And the team last year set a lot of expectations, and we’re just looking to get back down there and win it again.”
