Team Preview: Bunn High School
Head Coach: Patrick Reynell
Conference: Northern Carolina 2-A
Last Season: 9-16 (7-7 in conference) Lost in first round to eventual state 2-A champions Farmville-Central HS
Top players:
1) Quenten Wright #14, Sr., returning starting guard: Averaged 8ppg, 3 apg, 2spg last season as a junior. We will expect him to take on more of a scoring and shooting role this year. Last year, we had a talented front-court and Quenten did well always involving them. This year, we hope to use his agility to push the ball and score in transition. We will also use him off-the-ball as a shooter (shot 38% from three last season). He is our best on-the-ball defender. Offered a full ride to Elon for football.
2) D.J. Jones #4, Sr, returning starting guard: Averaged 10.7 and 1.8 steals as a junior. We will also expect him to increase his scoring output this year. A versatile guard who can handle either guard position. We hope to have him and Quenten play off each other. Garnering interest in football collegiate programs.
3) Jaylan Williamson #12, Sr, returning starting guard: averaged 7.1 ppg. Led team in threes along with D.J. with 21 made total. We hope to use him more offensively as well. Not afraid to shoot from three and had one game last season where he hit 5 threes. Also a good basket-cutter and slasher. We plan on moving him quite a bit off-the-ball and make the defense chase him. Our best off-the-ball defender. Good instincts.
4) Victor Dunston #10, Sr. returning guard: Has a good chance for a starting position (PG) tot ake ball-handling responsibilities. Did not get much time last season, but was very, very impressive in the summer. Showed an ability to use ball-screens well and get to the rim and make a play. Should complement the other three guards well; he is unselfish and can handle a lot of physical play. Tough, tough young man.
5) Jalen Lucas #30, Jr small forward: Saw a little varsity time last season due to football season. Will compete for a starting spot. Has improved greatly in off-season in weight room and on the court. Lanky perimeter player who has impressed in his ball-handling skills in combination with his length. Likes to shoot and can spot-up. Played very well with Quenten this summer and communicated well with him. Has displayed leadership qualities we value as a coaching staff.
6) Cameron Alston #32, Jr. small/power forward: Saw a little varsity time last season due to football season. Will compete for a starting a position. May be our tallest player; we will use him inside and out. A competitive rebounder, which will be valued for us because we are much smaller this season.
Season outlook:
“We will offensively be a very different team this year. Whereas last season our strength was in our front-court with seniors Shane Garrison (Sand Hills CC) and Tray Terrell, we are returning most of our guards and have become much smaller as a team. We will probably start 4-5 guards and look to push the ball and score in transition. We have some confident shooters; if we can shoot well consistently from three we can be very competitive. Our rebounding may be an issue. Defensively we hope we are deep enough to pressure and cause a little havoc for other teams, especially those with a bigger front-court. Key issue will be bench players understanding the man-to-man concepts as well as the conditioning of our starters and staying out of foul trouble. We have once again a very competitive non-conference schedule with Beddingfield, Louisburg, and our own Holiday Tournament Dec 27-29 (North Pitt, Wakefield, Wake Forest, Eastern Wayne, Durham School of the Arts, Southern Nash, Northern Nash). Our conference sent five teams to the playoffs last season and will be strong again. Lots of very good guards and kids that can really shoot well any night. Other coaching staffs are strong and have established styles of plays that benefit their personnel as well. We returned to the playoffs last season after a one-year absence (Lost Farmville Central in first round). Our goal is to return again with a higher seed,” said Head Coach Patrick Reynell
