Conference: Coastal Plains 1-A
Head Coach: Tod Morgan
Last Season: 19-9 (9-3 in conference) Lost in 2nd round of NCHSAA 1-A playoffs
Head Coach Tod Morgan had this to say about the upcoming season,”I feel we have a chance to be a very competitive team this year in 1A Basketball in Eastern NC. I know there are many very good teams in ENC (East Carteret, Riverside, Wallace-Rose Hill, Whiteville, Camden, Trask, Plymouth, Pamlico County, South Creek, Voyager all immediately come to mind…) but I feel that if we work hard, stay healthy, and play as a team, that we can be in the mix as well.”
Morgan stated, “In my 1st year at JSHS this past year (2015-16), we inherited a team that went 4-20 in 2014-15 with a fairly young team. With an emphasis on defense and sharing the ball more on offense, we were able to turn things around this past year and finished 19-9 overall. We graduated five (5) seniors, but return ten (10) players from last year’s team, so with more time together I feel we have a chance to be a very competitive team by conference play.”
Jones Senior is in a very good conference, the Coastal Plains Conference (CPC), with East Carteret still the team to beat in the league. Jones Senior HS toughened up the non-conference schedule to get them ready for the conference and state playoffs. In non-conference, they are playing several larger schools to test them early in the season: Havelock (3A), West Craven (3A), West Carteret (3A), Northside-Jacksonville (2A), Washington (2A), and South Lenoir (2A).
Jones Senior returns eight (8) of their ten (10) man rotation from last year, they counting on these young men to provide leadership and experience:
Janari Hill – Junior – G – 13.2 ppg
Zach Brooks – Senior – F – 12.7 ppg
Malik Brooks – Senior – G – 12.3 ppg
Khadre Brooks – Senior – G – 10.1 ppg
Raekwon Hatchell – Senior – F – 8.2 ppg
Josh Ward – Senior – F – 6.7 ppg
Malik Black – Senior – G – 5.0 ppg
Zyrek Jones – Senior – F – 4.0 ppg
“My concerns are us stay healthy as being a small 1A school, a lot of our guys also play football as the best athletes we have at the school, so just hoping and praying that we can have a successful football season and also stay healthy though it, Morgan stated.”
