Taison Chatman of Totino-Grace. Chatman opened the event, and many of the games, going at players off the dribble covering a ton of space with each dribble and using his body to shield before the high percentage release. And then on cue having seen Taison attack many players, the defenders would take a step back only to be shot over the top of. The offensive arsenal of Taison is massive and he hasn’t played a high school game yet.
Tommy Humphries Jr of Totino-Grace. The upside of this young man was made quite clear this weekend. Everything about his look screams long and talented athlete but when you see him smoothly move with the ball in his hands you see that this is a guard skilled player that can be used in many spots.
Lincoln Palbicki of Maple Grove. Without looking at the roster I thought “who is this upperclassmen big with a touch, I love how he’s using his body against a fellow 6-foot-9/6-foot-10 center”. And then I noticed that Lincoln is only a freshman to be! I was blown away not because of his size but because of his feel and touch already at this age.
Jackson Ressler of Lakeville South. I really enjoyed the way Ressler played against an older group of players. Ball pressure seniors, didn’t change a thing about the way Jackson played. It was quite refreshing to see a young player with such a poised fell to the game.
Ariyon Reuben of Park Center. I really liked the way Reuben handled the basketball breaking down players with a quick move freezing the defense followed by a shift to space for points. Reuben scored on older players and then sprinted back the other way like he was ready for more.
Nasir Whitlock of DeLaSalle. The handles, oh the handles! A young wizard with the ball. Nasir also showed some serious range plus a confidence that seemed unflappable regardless of what older player had words for him. Throwing in some slick passes and you had a fun player.
Max Wilson of South St. Paul. The crossover of this young man is so sharp and so quick defenders weren’t sure how to move with Max. And by the time they committed to a space Max had them beat with an attack or a super quick step into space for an attempt. Love his extensions to finish past the defense but also he took a lot of smacks and finished through them. A top 2023 in Minnesota.
