Christian Brothers and Briarcrest may have the two best backcourts in the league. Brentwood Academy lost point guard and Tennessee State commit Marcus Fitzgerald, but the Eagles will have junior guard Randy Brady back.
McCallie will have junior guard Eric Rivers Jr. back, and he was a beast last season.
So, the question is: Who will lead the league in scoring? I have more than one answer to this question. As of matter of fact, I have seven legit answers to this question.
Here are those seven answers, well possibilities:
Chandler Jackson, Christian Brothers: The sophomore point guard carried the Purple Wave on his back last season, especially on the offensive end. Jackson, 6-foot-4, was thrown into the fire as a freshman, and he handled it pretty well. Jackson averaged 15 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 block per game. His offense has taken the next step, thanks to his mid-range jump shot.
Reese McMullen, Christian Brothers: The junior guard is probably one of the best shooters in the league and in the 2021 class. McMullen has improved on his ball handling and catch-and-shoot. Last season, he averaged 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.5 steals for the Purple Wave. I expect McMullen to, once again, be a double-digit scorer.
Randy Brady, Brentwood Academy: Brady will not have Marcus Fitzgerald feeding him the basketball this upcoming season, which will hurt the Eagles in the backcourt. At least, Brentwood Academy has Brady, who averaged 20 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 assists per game last season. He will have to have another stellar season if the Eagles are hopeful of making another deep run in the state tournament.
Kennedy Chandler, Briarcrest: The 6-0 point guard filled up the stats sheet last season, averaging 19.5 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals per game for the Saints. He will have great numbers this upcoming season and probably be in the running for another Mr. Basketball trophy.
Michael Malone Jr., Briarcrest: The senior guard will be playing alongside Chandler. This good thing is that Chandler is an all-around point guard. He doesn’t have to score to control the tempo. Malone Jr. will get a lot of scoring opportunities because of all of the attention Chandler will get. Malone Jr. averaged just 9 points a game last season.
Marcellus Brigham Jr., Briarcrest: Brigham Jr. is another solid player who will get nice looks because of Chandler. He’s going to be a difficult matchup because of his height (6-5). Brigham Jr.’s scoring ability shouldn’t be questioned. His mid-range game is superb. Brigham Jr. averaged 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals per game last season for the Saints.
Eric Rivers Jr., McCallie: The 6-0 guard averaged 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals per game last season. Rivers Jr. thrives on attacking the basket. It wouldn’t shocked me to see Rivers Jr. somewhere in the top five in the league in scoring. This kid can play.
