No player in the state had a bigger summer than Waukee’s 6-7 junior sharpshooting wing, who picked up offers from Air Force, Iowa, Minnesota and Utah following a dominant run with Kingdom Hoops. Armed with one of the most lethal strokes in the Midwest, along with great size and length, Sandfort will have a huge year for a Warriors team that loses a lot of production.
First Team
2021 Payton Sandfort, Waukee (6.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 54.9 FG%, 44.8 3P%)
Sandfort came off the bench last year for a Waukee team that was the #1 team in the state before Noah Hart’s injury. The Warriors lose a lot of senior production, but with one of the best players in the state, and best shooters in the Midwest, on their side, they’ll be good again. Look for a dominant season from the 6-7 junior wing.
2021 Tucker DeVries, Waukee (9.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.4 steals, 62 3PM, 41.1 3P%)
Another 6-7 Waukee junior wing garnering plenty of Division I interest, DeVries was a major addition for Waukee last year after his dad got the head coaching job at Drake and they moved from Omaha. He’s long, fluid, and a knockdown shooter who will pair with Sandfort to give the Warriors an elite shooting perimeter.
2021 James Glenn, Southeast Polk (10.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 58 3PM, 46.0 3P%)
Another big-time shooter in the Iowa Division, Glenn transferred alongside older brother Sam from Grand View Christian last year and finished second in scoring (behind Sam). The Rams are now his team, and he should emerge as one of the best scoring threats in the CIML.
2020 Jeffrey Skogen, Mason City (11.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.9 steals)
The leading returning scorer in the division, Skogen also led the Mohawks in steals last season and ranked second in rebounding.
2020 Will Berg, West Des Moines Valley (7.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, 51.3 FG%)
One of the more talented two-way players in the CIML, this 6-8 big man has versatility on both ends of the floor, and while his numbers may not pop out with a deep Valley group, he’s certainly one of the best players in the state.
