In the first of three breakdowns, this one will highlight point guards that stood out. Reminder, some may play off-ball as well!
Guards:
• CJ Anthony (5’10” / G 2020 / Harvest Prep / All-Ohio Red 17U): CJ Anthony in my opinion is the top guard in the class of 2020 in Central Ohio, every time I watch him, he plays at a high level. Downhill scorer who is tough as nails to the basket. Anthony got teammates involved, talked on both ends, like a coach on the floor. Competed at a high level, flashed his tough on-ball defense as well.
• Tahj Staveskie (6’1” / G 2020 / Sandusky HS / All-Ohio Red 17U): Tahj usually runs with the Rebels, but was a part of the All-Ohio Red team this weekend. The 2020 guard used crafty ball handling to maneuver through the half court, got teammates involved, scored at will. A bucket off the dribble, Tahj has one of the better pull-ups you’ll see.
• Jalen Sullinger (5’9” / G 2021 / Thomas Worthington / All-Ohio Red 16U): Sullinger does his best work on ball. Was a primary facilitator that game I watched, continuously moving the ball or finding open teammates. I like how Jalen is developing that part of his game, as he’s already known as a scorer. The 2021 guard used crafty ball skills to create space and get good looks in the half court system.
• Keaton Turner (6’0” / G 2020 / Dublin Coffman / Ohio Hoopsters): Keaton Turner could be a potential riser come HS season. The 2020 guard moved the ball well on offense, as well as working off ball to get open. Stayed ready for the kick out . Turner is a three-level scorer that can get to the rim, doesn’t shy away from contact. Creating deflections on defense resulted in transition opportunities.
Keep an eye on:
• Damian Davis (5’10” / G 2020 / Ohio Hoopsters / Bexley HS): Damian Davis I haven’t heard much of before watching him this weekend, and I came away impressed. Comes off as a two way player that takes pride on defense. Creates turnovers, likes to get out and run in transition. Takes good care of the ball, and finishes strong at the hoop. Definitely a player I want to watch more.
