ICYMI: Day 1 Standouts – Best Of The South
Logan West & Antonio Williams (Jacksonville GameChangers)
A pair of Jacksonville bred forwards made a lasting impression on me in an early morning victory over Game Elite Blue. 2020 6’4″ Andrew Jackson athlete Logan West was doing some serious work around the basket, snatching rebounds and driving in for buckets. Built like a football player, West draws a whole lot of attention when going downhill. As for 2020 6’3″ Impact Christian forward Antonio Williams is an elusive attacker who likes to mix it up on both ends of the floor.
Michael Eads (Team Parsons)
The confidence level of 2020 6’4″ Edgewater guard Michael Eads is quite high right now. He’s been growing up before our eyes since his steady freshman campaign. On Friday, Eads was firing on all cylinders in a win over Alabama Celtics. In front of a deep group of Division I and Division II college coaches, he had a sequence with back to back 3’s. Eads is in for a huge senior season and he is a true all-around prospect who is steady as can be.
Marshaun West & Alex Vertus (Rock United)
17U Rock United had some really good stretches of team basketball especially defensively when looking for key steals. 2020 6’3″ Stoneman Douglas guard/forward Marshaun West is a tweener that always makes plays when I watch him suit up and he was cleaning up baskets, finishing off lay-ins and playing fast in transition. As for 2020 6’1″ Cardinal Gibbons guard Alex Vertus is one heck of a shooter, who got red hot in stretches on Friday. He can certainly get better as an attacker, but Vertus has a knack for picking his team up with his reliable jumper.
Reggie Raynor (Team Trezz)
There isn’t much defenders can do to try to contain 2020 6’5″ North Carolina Northwood Temple forward Reggie Raynor. He has been one gifted and tough-nosed scorer for Team Trezz so far this week and one of the most reliable prospects overall. Against Team Parsons on Thursday, he proved he belonged against a team filled with Division I athletes and he did again on Friday versus the competition.
Elhadji Thaim (Ohio Hoopsters)
A long and versatile forward that certainly has a chance to be groomed into a very good player is 2021 6’6″ Ohio Pickerington Central’s Elhadji Thiam. He was nearly unstoppable in stretches against 16U Rock United in a late afternoon tilt. His lengthy frame gives him an advantage against smaller defenders and if he can add strength and more dribble drive moves, he’ll boost his stock. Thiam is a surprisingly gifted mid-range shooter.
Jamal Norris & Dorian Allen (Team TMac)
Looking for hard working players? Then look no further than this pair of Team TMac players. 2020 6’3″ Vanguard Lake Wales guard Jamal Norris is the definition of a true shooter who can mix it up with his slashing and ability to finish with both hands. He scores at will at times. As for 2020 5’10” Auburndale guard Dorian Allen, he’s a quick and shifty guard who doesn’t back down from anyone and simply draws contact with his explosiveness on drives.
Jordan Hinds & Max Gordon (Rock United)
On the 16U Rock United squad, 2021 Cypress Bay duo Jordan Hinds and Max Gordon did the bulk of the scoring for its squad. Hinds is a 6’3″ guard who plays with a chip on his shoulder and is able to score with his focus, smoothness and overall IQ on the floor. The 5’9″ Gordon catches defenses by surprises and can absolutely stroke it from deep. He got his team going in crucial stretches on Friday.
