Continue ReadingThe Minnesota Fury made another run to the finals of the SPTS at the 17U level. First they took on the Comets in a much awaited rematch, and then they faced the OSA Crusaders in the final. Here is our impression from them, and the Comets today.
Fury
Kade Hart One Thought: One of the best pair of games I’ve seen Kade play this spring and summer. Everyone talks about his touch and today we saw it from the arc as Kade faded off a ball screen and then hit. Also had a couple big blocks on attacking guards helping over and he scored inside. In the title game he made three triples.
Who was watching: He has been offered by Waldorf and I believe Briar Cliff and they were both here. Also, you have to believe some NSICs there were interested after his nice performance.
Myles Hanson One Thought: Maybe it’s just a coincidence when I watch by Myles always hits multiple jumpers when I see him and he’s always getting active scores off the ball. Had a team high 12 today against the Comets.
Who was watching: Northern Iowa and SDSU have offered, both had coaches there including Ben Jacobson.
Owen Chose One Thought: He had a string of passes that I loved. His feed to the corner after seeing both guys came to him from a ball screen was really good, his no look feed was excellent, and he had a strip into a full court lead. Owen hit several late game foul shots to ice the game.
Who was watching: There were several NSICs here and Harding University may have been here too as they recently offered.
Oakley Baker One Thought: Baker did a lot of worker things to get his free throws. Hit an early trey but from there he had to score with backside efforts, transition runs, and o-boards and he did those things to get his five for five free throws. Also hit another late game trey.
Who was watching: Oakley doesn’t have an NSIC offer but they’ve been following him and MIAC schools were at games like Hamline, St. John’s, Concordia-Moorhead, and a few others.
Broc Finstuen One Thought: Blows me away how nobody found him on the backside or ran with him in the open floor. Broc had 11 points and seven boards and all of it was his strong and agile frame getting dead sprints to the rim against a defense that either didn’t put a body him or wasn’t able to when they tried. Huge piece to the win was his effort plays.
Who was watching: St. Cloud State and Sioux Falls are the NSIC schools that have offered and both were there watching Broc.
Mitchell Sueker One Thought: Mitch has carved out a nice role as a starter playing hard on the opposing four, taking open looks when he gets them, making the nice reads. Sueker had five boards and a couple baskets.
Who was watching: SMSU was there, Northern State had an assistant there, and Nebraska-Kearney saw them.
Comets
Bryce Irsfeld One Thought: Bryce continues to hit from the arc (three treys), was the most consistent scorer in the game with 17 points, and he did a really nice job defending Owen Chose for most of the game.
Who was watching: UMD head coach Matt Bowen, Winona State staff, ND School of Mines, MN State Moorhead Chad Walthall, USF, and Bemidji State have all offered and have been in Sioux Falls.
Gavin Baumgartner One Thought: Came out with an explosive first half hitting a three and attacking the basket with nobody able to move in front to stop him. Had an early nine points and then only could get one more shot off the rest of the way.
Who was watching: St. Cloud State and MN State Moorhead head coaches were down here to see him, Bemidji State, Sioux Falls, and Bemidji State all here too this week. All have offered. NDSU was in the crowd looking on.
Derek Thompson One Thought: Loved how he battled with Magrath around the basket, Derek had eight points and six boards to four and two for his opponent. Also stepped out and hit a trey and is playing more confidently.
Who was watching: U of Mary Joe Kittel and three assistants watched and later offered, Bemidji State has offered and was there with a couple staff members. Several other NSIC schools looking on that haven’t yet offered.
Simon Wright One Thought: Was the best rebounder on the floor and late in the game he regrouped from a 2-6 shooting start to score seven points late including a trey to try and get his team back in the game. Always draws a tough defensive assignment against the best forward or big.
Who was watching: Simon has 11 D1 offers and counting. Who made the trip to Sioux Falls to see him? USD, NDSU, UND, Wright State, and UWGB from what we saw. NHR saw David Richman from NDSU as a head coach watching and Northern Iowa Ben Jacobson was here multiple days scouting Simon. Scott Nagy from Wright State came in as well.
