And as always this tournament did not disappoint with high level action at numerous gyms all over the city. Here are some of the top performers that I observed Saturday in the 11th/12th grade division.
Shameel Abid (2020/Apex 17U Silver) – You will want to remember this name. Abid has next level size (6’8) with a solid frame, good hands and a still developing understanding of the game. Shameel did a good job running the court, crashing the boards and showed some quality finishing ability around the rim. He also had a good understanding on how to make himself available for passes on dribble penetration from the perimeter. While he still needs work finishing in traffic and lacks some explosion, Abid could be a good fit for a regional D-II/III program.
Dustin Davis (2021/Ohio Players) – Davis played very well Saturday in the Players 49-42 victory over OEBA-Righter Saturday. He was aggressive from the start attacking the paint and showing really good finishing ability in the paint. The Purcell Marian product also showed good lateral quickness on the defensive end while being very disruptive. With the Cavaliers graduating six seniors this season, this will be an important summer for Dustin heading into the prep season.
Khalil Davis (2020 PHO #116/Apex 17U Silver) – Coming off a strong regular season were he was named 2nd team all-conference for Princeton, Davis looked bouncy and athletic as Apex cruised to a 20-point victory over SMAC Primetime 2020. Always known for being able to live in the paint, it was the pace that Davis played with which impressed the most. He does not play the game at one speed anymore and does not chase shoots like he did in the past. He also knocked down a couple of shots from behind the arch as well.
Coleton Landis (2019 PHO #73/OEBA Righter 11th) – While I was surprised to see the big fella playing in this event, Landis played hard and well on Saturday. One of the better seniors in Ohio, Landis was maybe the best player on the court in OEBA loss to the Ohio Players. The Rio Grande commit was dominate in the paint, finishing strong around the rim while being dominate on the offensive backboard.
