In the second game, a big second half pushed Convoy Crestview over Richmond Heights 59-49 in a physical game.
Game Takeaways:
Berlin Hiland operates a well balanced offense – Scoring 57 points, the Hawks found themselves with three players in double figures. Sam Haberger leading the way with 17, and Andy Miller and Kendall Hochstetler combining for 25 points. Whether it’s from deep or scoring inside, Hiland operates both ways. Shooting 4-11 from deep, which really got them their lead they wouldn’t lose. Hiland moves the ball around with a mission to get an open shot that they found on many occasions.
Lacking athleticism Caden Niekamp was solid for St. Henry – At 6-foot-6 and a bigger frame the senior had a mismatch inside and was able to capitalize on it at times. Must note his ability to pass from the low post, where he has good vision and it was a creation opportunity for the Redskins. Grabbing eight boards, Niekamp was able to simply outreach players at times with his size. A solid showing for a new player to me.
More Takeaways:
Derick Dealey creates his own shot well – With 15 points in the first half the undersized guard kept Crestview in this one. Able to handle the ball well, Dealey can dribble into his own shot. The hesisitation move is the go to for the senior, as it allows him to create some space to get off his jumper. Keeps solid control of the ball, as you won’t see him turn it over a whole lot, even against a good defensive team in Richmond.
Javin Etzler pushed Crestview past Richmond – A slow first half didn’t last for the senior, as he was able to produce big time in the second half. Javin was able to bang down low, showing some low-post scoring strength. A sweet stroke from deep, Etzler connected on one of those as well. 16 points in the third quarter was pure dominance for the Miami OH commit. The third quarter on slaught was the gamechanger in this one, that gave Crestview the lead they wouldn’t give up.
Curtis Houston showcased flashes of an all-around game – Curtis Houston stood out to me for Richmond Heights. The senior had 13 points where he was able to score from all levels, including flying through the lane for a slam. Multiple assists in this one the 6-foot-3 guard kept things moving on the offensive end.
