The Big Stage. Three spots today hold the “Big Stage”.
The most bang for you buck will come at St. John’s where they have squeezed in four games tonight, starting with Annandale vs St. Cloud Cathedral at 3:30. Albany vs Eden Valley-Watkins follows at 5pm, Foley vs Melrose at 6:30, and then Pine City vs Spectrum at 8pm. Half of these teams have been ranked at some point this year in Class AA. This is the quarters so the winners will be back at it on Wednesday with the championship being played on Friday night.
The highest profile games will take place at Hastings where they always 4AAAA semi-finals will be played. First it’s Cretin-Derham Hall vs Tartan putting a wonderful guard match-up of Tre Holloman vs Antwan Kimmons on the floor followed by St. Paul Central taking on one seed East Ridge.
The Class A section two semi-finals are also must watch basketball and these games are at Gustavus. Mr. Basketball finalist Issac Fink and his Class A favorite Springfield team face 1-loss Springfield in the 6pm game. At 8pm rivals New Ulm Cathedral and Minnesota Valley Lutheran meet for the third time this year (they’ve split the games to this point).
Upset City! There wasn’t anything that made big headlines on Saturday although there were a few three seeds beating two seeds. Minnesota Transitions is a 12 seed beating West Lutheran (the four seed) but MTS has only lost six games all year where as West Lutheran was barely .500. Doesn’t seem like a monster upset although MTS did lose to West Lutheran earlier in the year. Kyriaun Christian scored 30 for MTS while Michael Emery-Minor has 29.
Right on Schedule. The games in STMA were squeezed in during the AM hours with Breck beating Rockford and Minneapolis North taking out Blake in 10am games. Rockford’s students were wild and fresh but David Roddy exploded for 35 points and 18 boards. North beat Blake by 27 led by 16 points from Eli Campbell and 15 from Davon Townley. In the 11:30am games Maranatha ended the year for Providence Academy and Litchfield blew out Watertown-Mayer 77-50. This puts Breck vs MCA and North vs Litchfield on Wednesday night.
Where’s the Czar? He joined a nice group of media (and by this I mean there were at least three) at the Trinity vs Minneapolis Edison game. This was a Saturday afternoon contest before the snow game. The Czar tweet says “Trinity def Edison 45-42. Ben Maslow 15 Trinity no FG last 13 min”
Tip of the Hat to the Career. Nick Manthana of Rockford recently committed to Briar Cliff. He scored 17 plus a game this year and made 12 of 12 foul shots vs Breck but it wasn’t enough to slow David Roddy. Dylan Drees is a big with potential from BSM. His team gave Waconia a real fight with Dylan scoring 19 but it wasn’t enough to move on in the playoffs. Drees will make a really nice MIAC big going forward.
