Prospect Spotlight: Adam Mattes (2022)
As a freshman with Newton, 6-foot-3 guard Adam Mattes was arguably the team’s best player. And as freshman go, he was definitely one of Iowa’s best.
With his tremendous size and quickness, getting to the rack is what Mattes was able to do best this season, allowing him to score a team-best 10.5 points per game for the Cardinals.
“I feel like my driving game and getting past defenders is a real strength of mine. And I love using the mid-range game with pull-ups and everything around there,” said Mattes. “And I’m really working on my 3s, and want to get to the point where I can knock down every open one I get.”
Newton didn’t have a good season, but Mattes was able to gain some valuable experience that will help the Cardinals in the future. The squad’s six best scorers all return next season.
“We were hoping to be better, but we were a really young team, none of us really had varsity experience, so that was good for us to get,” said Mattes. “We’re just hoping to get better next year.”
Mattes is now getting set for what will be an important offseason with All Iowa Attack 16U. He’s hoping to generate some college hoops interest, and to improve ahead of his junior season with Newton.
“I’m really hoping to improve my ball-handling and my 3-point shot,” said Mattes. “And I’m really looking forward to going to the tournaments and working hard every day, getting ready for next year.”
