Continue ReadingMason City point guard Kyle Lang broke out last season as a junior, and now the 5-foot-11 point guard is playing on a high-profile grassroots team and ready to make big splash this summer on the 17U circuit.
Currently Lang is in contact with area Division III and NAIA programs, and he’s spoken with one Illinois Division II school.
He feels like playing with All Iowa Attack Red 17U this July will not only help him with his skill-set, but it could generate some major attention from additional college coaches.
“I’m mainly talking to Briar Cliff, they’re showing the most interest. And I’ve had conversations with a coach from Rockhurst. And then last year I went to a couple D3 camps, at Simpson and Central,” said Lang.
“I get some letters for other D3 schools that say ‘good luck with your season’ and stuff like that — but nothing real big yet.”
Lang added: “I feel like I could maybe start getting some more looks this summer while playing with All Iowa Attack. And I feel like it’s going to improve my game as well, but mainly the recruiting process, and hopefully it treats me well.”
A skilled point guard with handles and shot-making ability, Lang defined his style of play in his own words to PHI.
“I feel like basically I just like getting my teammates the best shot they can get,” said Lang. “Finding them when they’re open and sharing the ball — and then scoring when I’m needed I guess.”
Last season as a junior Lang earned the starting point guard spot on Mason City — he averaged 11.3 points on 52 percent shooting, and dished out a team-high 2.6 assists per game.
“I thought I played pretty well, I thought I came into the role of a leader last season — especially having some big players like Austin (Miller) and Jareese (Williams) on the floor, if they were struggling I could pick it up with the scoring, and if they were hot I could get them the ball,” said Lang, who is eager to get back on the floor with Attack Red this summer.
“I played just a few tournaments with my school team last summer, but I thought I had the skill-set to play with All Iowa Attack, so that’s what led me into making that decision this year. And it’s been going great so far.
On the all-star squad that features many of Iowa’s top-50 2017s, Lang relishes his role as a primary distributor.
“My role is not to be the guy that scored 20 points per game, but more making the hustle plays and getting guys like Connor (Kasperbauer) and Collin (Hill) shots,” said Lang, who is continuing to try and improve offensively.
“I’m really working to improve my pull-up game this summer. I’ve been really working in the gym, just trying to create a more open pull-up jumper for myself, so that’s what I’m really working on this offseason.”
