It was also emotional on the opposite spectrum as teams were elated that their season ended the way they envisioned. The thing that seems to be most notable is the level of sportsmanship that coaches and players show for one another under difficult circumstances. There was also a few teams and coaches that displayed the opposite type of behavior. In the long run we hope that sports becomes a learning experience for everyone as in life not everything goes our way.
Layton Christian Wins the 2A State Championship
While Parowan had a fantastic game play this game was great. We had a small town team vs. a group of imported athletes. The game slowed down and it gave Parowan a fighting chance, but when Coach Porter removed star player Lino Saez it proved to be the difference as they sped up the game and went on a 6-0 run and never looked back. Porter Wood is a gritty player that could play some small college basketball if given the opportunity. You could see his level of IQ against a great team. He ended the game with 16 points. The difference for Layton Christian was Tournament MVP Sam Muller who had 18 points and 6 rebounds. His athleticism was key for this slow paced game.
Morgan win the 3A State Championship
The two teams that everyone thought should’ve made it to the final game made it. It was a rural town ideal matchup. Richfield was favored but it did not phase Morgan as they got down early but made a come back that was lead by 24 points by Trey Miles. Richfield made it interesting at the end of the game as they started hitting some three’s late in the game but they simply ran out of time.
Bonneville stuns Logan
In a game that featured a Logan team that earned this higher seed to avoid the 1 seed didn’t workout as planned. Jordan Citte a predominantly JV player hit a game winning buzzer 3-pointer to send Logan home. Bonneville now has two shooters on boths sides of the court that can maybe make some noise against teams that don’t contest the 3-point all well.
Sky View Steals the 1 Seed
Everyone knew coming in to this game that Sky View was not your typical 4 seed. Mason Falslev was able to create for his team as they got open looks against a variety of Juan Diego defenses. A single digit 2nd and 4th quarter was JD’s doom. They could not score against an extended 2-3 zone. A 2-3 zone that Juan Diego has used all year was their ultimate doom. The player that stood out the most was Mountain Crest transfer Sam Phipps, who was the athletic difference in this game. He showed that he could play at an elite level. D1 JUCO’s need to get on this kid ASAP. He could turn into something special.
Upsets are Inevitable
When you look out on the court and see players distracted or not engaged during warm-ups. We often see players paying attention to the crowd or looking for their parents in the stands. Teenagers are so unpredictable. Teams at times get hot at the right time or a certain player is sick and not playing 100 %. Regardless of what the outcome is, looking for excuse that are not controllable is not the way to ease the pain of not winning it all. Having self accountability builds resilience and that is what our young players need more these days. They don’t need excuses from their peers, parents and coaches. In the end, it is just a game. A beautiful game, and emotional game but just a game.
