After 2 seeded Mercer Island was upset by 10 seed Wes Seattle and 6 seed Ingraham upset 3 seed Eastside Catholic, Garfield was looking to do the same with the 1 seed Vikings.
The Bulldogs were fighting an uphill battle all night, falling behind early. They would cut into the lead through out the game but just couldn’t get over the hill.
The Rainier Beach Vikings had it rolling, with six players scoring in double figures. Metro League MVP Marjon Beauchamp lead the game in scoring with 23 and some crazy fastbreak dunks. Jamon Kemp and Micah Monroe also joined in on the dunk fest with multiple throw downs of their own.
Garfield was lead by 6th man senior, Caleb Anglin. Anglin finished with 22 points and hit big shot after big shot to keep the Bulldogs above water. This was a season high for Caleb in the biggest game of the year for the young Bulldogs. Micah Jessie also contributed 18 in the loss.
O’Dea vs Bellevue
O’Dea has had it share of struggles this season but with playoffs here comes a new season. Nobody knows this better then coach Kerr.
The Wolverines came out strong, ending the quarter all tied at 11 a piece. But a big 2nd quarter from O’Dea put Bellevue against the ropes. Though the wolverines answered back with a big run in the 3rd, it wasn’t enough for them to get the upper hand. Bellevue was lead by senior point guard Jalen Love with 20 points.
O’Dea was without its sophomore guard John Christofilis due to injury but their mentality is ‘next man up’. The Irish came out on top behind big performances from 5 star sophomore big man Paolo Banchero and senior leader Noah Williams. Paolo scored 20 points while Williams put in 14 before leaving the game with a minor ankle injury.
Takeways:
Rainier Beach vs. O’Dea preview
We have a rematch of the highly anticipated regular season game that was action packed with dunks and physical play. O’Dea won’t have their sharp shooting sophomore John Christofilis due to a foot injury. It will be interesting to see how they adjust their offensive scheme for the athletic defense of Rainier Beach.
Rainier Beach foul trouble
In their win over Garfield, Beach lost 3 key players who fouled out including 5star Beauchamp. If O’Dea can produce the similar results and get key player disqualified, they could even the playing field.
Losers Bracket
The unexpected has happened Eastside Catholic is in the losers bracket. A team that was almost a lock to be in the district championship loses in its first game. Its almost unimaginable for the Crusaders to loser twice in a weekend when they only lost once all year. That lose coming to #1 ranked Beach. The Crusaders will take on the Mercer Island Islanders and Bellevue will take on the Garfield Bulldogs. On this side of the bracket its win or go fishing, with that in mind don’t count anyone out for that final regionals spot.
