Continue ReadingWith nearly 20 games played by the majority of Kentucky’s teams and updated rankings coming at the end of the season, it’s time to take stock of some players that have been underrated thus far in their high school careers. Here’s a look at which Kentucky Juniors are deserving of more praise and a potential move in the class rankings.
- Parker Rice, Butler County – The Bears don’t play the toughest schedule but their 12-6 start is one of the best they’ve experienced in years. A large reason for their success is 6’5 Junior Parker Rice. Leading the team with 18.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, Rice is able to challenge a defense with his shooting at 44% from behind the 3 point line. Look for Rice to join our 2020 rankings in the next update.
- JaRel Montgomery, Bardstown – Averaging 13 points and 3 rebounds from the point guard spot for the Tigers, Montgomery reminds me of former Bardstown point guard and current Georgetown College point guard Eljay Cowherd. JaRel is a shifty guard who can get to the rim consistently. His issue right now is finishing at the rim. His shooting percentages won’t blow you away but he can really play and is due for a move up the 2020 rankings.
- Terrin Hamilton, Scott County – A long and athletic 6’6 forward, Hamilton checks into our rankings at 16 but doesn’t get much respect around the state. If Terrin played anywhere but Scott County, he would be averaging close to 20 points and 8 rebounds per game. After 2 and a half years as a backup, Terrin moved into the starting lineup when Michael Moreno was injured and has thrived since. Terrin has scored in double figures all but one game since entering the starting lineup for the 21-1 Cardinals.
- Jabari Kyle, Middlesboro – Kyle is another player who is currently unranked but will move into the Junior Class rankings at the next update. Jabari is a shifty lead guard who doesn’t get sped up and shoots 45% from three while making enough perimeter shots to keep the defense honest. Athletic and smart, Kyle has a chance to lead his team to an All A state title this week.
- Nik Sorrell, Glasgow – Another point guard who is too low on the rankings list, Sorrell does everything for Glasgow. Averaging 20 points and 9 rebounds for the season, Nik may be the most valuable player in the 4th region this year. He does his damage inside the three point line but does hit one 3 per game at nearly 50% from the field for the season.
- Mark Goode, LaRue County – After a bit of a down Sophomore season last year, Goode has rebounded to put up impressive numbers as a Junior for one of the 5th region’s best teams. Averaging 16 points and 9 rebounds for a Hawk team that has played a really good schedule this year, Mark shows serious polish in the post while making over 6 shots per game at 57% from the field.
- Trevon Harris, John Hardin – Another 5th region player, Harris is a Swiss army knife on the court. He plays and defends every position and uses his tremendous length to cover a lot of ground on defense. The only thing lacking in his game right now is consistent outside shooting. As a Junior, Trevon has only taken 11 three point shots in 21 games.
- Grant Disken, Covington Catholic – Going from JV starter to varsity leading scorer since last season, Disken is suddenly the main player on one of Kentucky’s best teams. Leading the team in scoring while posting 51/43/74 shooting splits and even adds 3 rebounds per game from the point guard spot. Finally given an opportunity, Grant is thriving in his Junior year.
