4 Freshman scorers who have put their teams in position to win

4 Freshman scorers who have put their teams in position to win

Below are some standout freshman who have been filling up the state sheet in the San Joaquin district. (pictured above is Jake Overbay 2022 of Lincoln High School)

Davion Wright a hyper athletic 6’2 freshman guard has been filling it up for Franklin High School in Elk Grove. Averaging 14.4 points a game Davion had scored in double figures in 17 of their 22 games. He has also scored 20 points or more in 4 of their games. Some big numbers for a freshman. Davions game is simple, he does what he needs to do to help his team win and that is usually putting the ball in the basket. Being one of his teams top scorers Davion has adapted to the varsity level well and has turned what would be called an “adjustment year” a statement year putting Northern California on notice that he is a top 10 freshman. Shooting 45% from the field and 38% from 3 with 45 made 3’s Davion has been filling it up from all 3 levels on the floor. With season highs of 24 points (10-15) from the field against Kennedy 57-47 win, and 25 points against Jesuit (10-17) Davion has been very efficient in his game so far. Look for a big jump in his rank as freshman in our Nor Cal 2022 rankings.

Malik Rose is averaging 8.8 points for Folsom High and has been their primary ball handler. With his season high at 15 points against Whitney High, Malik has been flirting in the 10-15 point range. Which is very good number for a freshman who starts at one of the most notorious high schools in Northern California. With an 18-5 record Malik is not the only reason that his Bulldogs are winning but he has a lot to do with it. With great quickness and great court vision Malik blows by all defenders and finds open teammates wherever they are open. With great pace at the point guard spot, he has learned how to slow his team down and get them back in their set. He has also earned the freedom to break a set and put his defender in a high ball screen situation which works in his favor 85% of the time.Being the number 2 scoring freshman in the San Joaquin CIF district Malik has stepped into his big role just fine.

Jake Overbay of Lincoln High School has established himself as the best shooter in the freshman class in California. Coming in as the number 7 ranked freshman in Northern California. Jake played 4 JV games and never went back. Getting maximum time on Varsity Jake has been hitting 2.5 3’s a game and dishing out about 3-4 assist while doing so. Jake’s ability to shoot the long ball opens up a lot of his drives and nice catch and shoot 15 footers. Running off screens Jake has become a master at switching directions and keeping his hands ready and getting his feet set quick to get his shot off. On the break he will also stop and let one fly from long range. With a season high of 6 3’s made in a game, look for Jake’s ranking to jump up from his superior play all season thus far. His fighting Zebras are 16-6 on the year.

Darrion Williams of Capital Christian High School has been a consistent freshman for Capital. Something that they needed with a slow 0-7 start to the season. Standing at 6’5 Darrion has a great body and build and uses it to his advantage in the paint. Boxing defenders out or putting himself in good post up position for his teammates to feed him. Known as the team's trail man Darrion is shooting 65% from the field and 31% from 3. His recent pick up in aggressiveness has spark a great serge in his team. Since league play Darrion has been attempting more shots and crashing the glass consistently. Something he did not do the first half of the season. With his team now 9-12 on the year but a great 5-1 in league play. You can count on a countied aggressive approach from the 6-5 freshman.
