Today we go baseline to baseline with a prospect who has been playing varsity since his freshman season. We will break down his strengths and weakness. Glance at the outlook of his future in basketball. Let me introduce to you Rubin Jones a 6’4 PG class of 2020 Jack Yates High School (Houston,TX) a UIL 4A school.
Rubin is a solid point guard who runs the show for Yates. He plays very poised and under control at all times. He can speed up and slow down his opponent. Super high IQ both offensively and defensively. He drops dimes all over the court. Can take his defender off the dribble. Knocks down the trey ball. Shoots well from the mid range also off the bounce. Sometimes he reaches a little to much but his active hands and lateral movement makes him a good defender. I love that he has started to play above the rim offensively. This is allowing him to separate himself from the other prospects.
This season Rubin is averaging 18.3 points per game, 6.6 assist per game, 6.2 rebounds per game, and 3.8 steals per game. Last season as a sophomore he played just as a facilitator. His numbers from this season alone is a huge jump from last year. Jack Yates is currently 8-0 in district and 17-4 overall. They are currently ranked 4th in the state. Rubin has been playing varsity since his freshman season. That season they went 23-8 overall 9-1 in district play and fell in the Regional Finals. His sophomore season they went 25-3 overall and 12-0 in district. He was an all-district selection last year. They loss once again in the Regional Finals to the eventual back to back state champions.
Rubin you have been playing varsity since your freshman year correct? Yes sir. Can you tell us a little bit about the grind from then until now? My freshman year it was super fast. It has prepared me to practice harder and play harder. That experience has helped me tremendously. The game is starting to slow down for me compared to my freshman year and last year. Yates has a great history and a lot of great teams. What makes this season different from last season for you? This year we have multiple guys who can score the ball. We aren’t depending on just one or two people. The coach has put more trust in us. Defensively we talk more and we are more on the same page than last year. Talk a little bit about your game. What areas of your game has improved the most from last year to this year? My athleticism and ability to score the ball has improved the most. Talk about this anybody can get it in the lane mentality you have now. Rubin “laughs.” Yeah I could dunk in the summer, but now it’s like i’m trying to dunk every time i get in the lane. So talk a little bit about your recruitment and how that’s going. Right now i have two offers. North Texas University and UTEP. I have like 30+ schools who have been contacting me. I’ll be taking some visits to a couple of those schools coming up. Also UTEP is scheduling one for me. For those who have never seen you play or Yates play. If you could invite them out to your game right now. What would you say? Straight excitement! We play up tempo so it wont be no slow game or low scoring game. The stands will be hype and loud. You’ll See dunking, steals, three point shots.
I would like to thank Rubin Jones for the interview. I wish him and his teammates a very healthy season as they prepare for a state title run. You can watch Rubin latest highlight reel below. For any recruitment questions about Rubin please contact me or one of the Prep Hoops Texas staff members.
