Though the score ended up 81-64 in favor of Cretin-Derham Hall, many things caught our eye in this matchup between the Raiders and the Rochester John Marshall Rockets. Here they are:
X-factors. Amari Carter was a buzzsaw from the tip. The lengthy senior has always been a defensive hunger guy but he added 20 points today in a big way—offensive rebounds, putbacks, a couple perimeter takes—he was big for the Raiders which allowed Tre Holloman and Jaeden King to focus on other things besides shouldering the scoring load. Curtis Jones was the same way. The transfer from Minneapolis South hit four treys in five minutes and finished the day with seven of them for 21 points to lead CDH in scoring. He’ll be a huge addition on the wing next to King.
Hurt does what he does. No surprise to anyone that Matthew Hurt got 40 today, and it was just as easy as usual. His length at 6-foot-10 is untouchable and he rebounds by standing and tipping so effortlessly to himself. His outside shot wasn’t very consistent today and I credit the CDH frontcourt for picking him up early in the possession. But another day at the office means a stuffed stat sheet.
Rockets rest is something to watch. Montrae Hiatt came off the bench and had a nice perimeter game knocking down some tough shots to keep it close early on. I was impressed by Lincoln Meister’s work on the glass at 6-foot-7. Simon Werven is a capable ballhandling wing. Jacob Daing’s athleticism and length are attributes that JM hasn’t had in a secondary spot for a long time. These guys will contend really hard with whoever they face. I think with a few more games together they’ll find a rhythm and rake the Big 9.
Finding a flow. Karsten Broadley transferred to the metro area this fall and his impact for the Raiders was quiet but visible. Broadley—a 6-foot-6 senior forward—hit a three-pointer and defended helpside well on the interior for CDH. He won’t be a huge scoring option like he was at Fosston, but when he can get you a big bucket or rebound, he’ll do it. Good to see him gaining some familiarity with the physicality and pace of basketball in the Twin Cities.
Anticipation for the 2020s. Tre Holloman, as pointed out by our Ryan James, is going to be a four-year EYBL player and a five-year varsity starter. He’s come into Cretin and exuded confidence in claps. He’s taking control of his floor and now has the reins for the next four years. The freshman looks and plays like he’s a college kid already. Smart basketball instincts, talented, and obviously highly regarded across the nation. Imagine where he’ll be in his senior campaign. This should be fun.
