The Game of the Night
St. Cloud Cathedral and Melrose were right next to each other in the state rankings but in the head to head game it was Melrose that was eight points better earning the victory. Reegan Nelson was the West Central Conference MVP last year and he played like the best player on the floor last night scoring 24 in a 79-71 victory. Nelson was one of four Dutchmen in double figures and early in the game when his team was struggling Nelson scored 14 straight at times carrying his team.
Cathedral was led by Jackson Jangula who also had 25 while Nick Schaefer had 19.

How About the Stars?
Holy Angles won nine games last year and expectations weren’t high. Then, the Johnson brothers (Emmett and Charles) transferred to the school from Minneapolis Washburn and some hope was restored. But an 82-53 win over a Blake team that is young but returns several starters?
Emmett and Charles did their part each scoring 13 and adding not only a transition push but also a defensive punch. The story of the game though was likely the Stars frontcourt Thor Holien and Matt Banovetz. A six-foot-3 senior forward, Holien had a solid junior year but nobody expected a near 30 point explosion. Add in the 20 from Banovetz and that was a noteworthy victory for AHA.
Big W for the Cougs
Yesterday we talked about Centennial maybe being a team we underestimated earlier in the fall and there was more evidence of that last night when the Cougars knocked off Forest Lake 78-65. Centennial had four players in double figures led by Carter Anderson’s 20 and Ricky Eason’s 20. Forest Lake wasn’t quite full strength but even if they were, the Cougars depth is what pushed them to the win. Riley Van Buskirk had a big season opener with 18 plus Jaxon Waldvogel had 11. Watch out for Centennial!
Steven Lawver Makes a Name for Himself
Steven Lawver is a 6-foot-1 junior forward from ACGC. In talking about last night’s game the discussion was about the frontline of Morris Area taking on ACGC veterans Dawson Miller and Josh Kinzler but it was Lawver who took over. Steven put up a game high 26 points plus grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists.
Statements Made
Here are teams that made big statements Tuesday
- Steven Crowl scored 21 for Eastview in an overtime win over Chaska and Zach Lea (had 25). David Richman of North Dakota State was in the crowd to watch both
- Stillwater crushed Henry Sibley and four guys were in high teen double figures
- New Prague earned a massive win beating Lakeville South 44-42 in a slugfest. Hunter Nielson had 18
- Princeton is earning their lofty ranking so far this year, this time by controlling Delano with a double figure win. Jon Stimmler had 22.
- St. Cloud Tech doesn’t look like they want to slip like many expected them to. Odier Olange and Kedrik Osourah each had 18 for the victors.
- Buffalo might be looking at a great year but they aren’t ready for Wayzata. Jacob Beeninga had 26 and the Trojans won by 23.
- MCA earned a big win defeating Jordan 65-62. The beat of the Mustangs is that their wins are a team effort and that’s what it was as six different Stangs scored three or more buckets.
- Luke Schwartzhoff led La Crescent with 21 points leading his team to a statement victory over Rushford-Peterson.
