Prospect Update: Angelo Winkel (2021)
Already with some high-major interest coming in, Bishop Garrigan sophomore Angelo Winkel could be a guy with a stack of scholarship offers by this time next year.
The 6-foot-9 forward had a good 15U season with All Iowa Attack, and is off to a blistering start to his sophomore campaign with the Golden Bears. He’s spent the early part of this season being the main-man, and showcasing his versatility as a big-man.
“Mostly last year I was more of a post-up player, this year I’ve gotten a little taller and I’ve developed more into a combo-forward; I can dribble outside and take people out there, and I just have more of an all-around skill-set, not just back to the basket,” said Winkel.
With All Iowa Attack 15U, Winkel was able to gauge his skill-set against some of the top competition in the Midwest. He and the team thrived.
“We had some great players, and playing with all those guys was great. I thought we put together a really good team, and I thought we had the best team in Iowa, AAU-wise,” he said.
Now, he’s taken the reins of one of the best teams in Class 1A. Through two games, Winkel is averaging 19 points, 14 rebounds and 6.5 blocks per game.
“This year, I’m able to show my game more so than I did last year. I think my numbers will go up a lot in just about every category this year,” said Winkel. “I’ve had a good first few games, and I’m looking to keep those blocks numbers up, that’s something I’ve improved on since last year.”
Recently, his recruiting stock has started to rise. Winkel has taken visits to Iowa and Northern Iowa and he’ll be headed to Iowa State this weekend. He’s been talking to Creighton a little bit, and hopes to take a visit there soon.
And still with two years left to see his recruitment materialize, Winkel has his sights set on high-level hoops.
“My goal is to turn myself into a high-major player,” said Winkel. “Right now, I think I have the skill-set to be a mid-major-type prospect. I’m mostly just working on defense and being able to defend a lot of positions.”
