Triple-doubles and 50-point performances are sought-after for these “Premier Performers” lists. We also like high efficiency games and total stat-stuffers. Below, you’ll find 10 striking performances from this past week.
Derek Krogmann, West Delaware — 34 points, 21 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks
It’s not too often you see 30 point, 20 rebound performances, but for 6-foot-6 senior Derek Krogmann, it might become a routine thing. The Northern Iowa recruit has spent the better part of three years as one of the state’s best bigs, and this season is going to be special for lengthy lefty.
Casey Kleemeier, Winterset — 11 points, 12 assists, 7 steals, 7 rebounds
Quadruple-doubles are really, really rare, and this is as close to one as we’ve seen so far this season. Kleemeier is about winning by any means necessary, and he makes that evident here with the 12 assists and stellar defensive numbers. The 5-foot-10 senior took just eight field-goal attempts in this win over Boone, but he certainly finds other ways to impact the game.
Noah Hart, Waukee — 24 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals
Here’s a guy who should be in the conversation of top point guards in the state, and he’s off to a blistering start to his 2018-19 campaign. At 6-foot-3, Hart has no trouble rebounding from the PG spot. And his vision and ability to make tough passes are high-level. The efficiency here was off the charts, Hart was 9-10 from the floor, 4-4 from deep in the win over Des Moines East.
Cliff McCray, Sioux City West — 22 points, 10 assists, 10 rebounds, 2 steals
If we had to guess who is going to lead Class 4A in triple-doubles this season, we’d have to say McCray. The athletic 6-foot-2 point guard is two for two this season in notching trip-doubs, this one came in a season-opening win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton. He strung together another trip-doub against CB Lincoln his next time out.
Tyreke Locure, Des Moines North — 40 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 4 steals
It’s possible we’ve written about this fiery Des Moines North point guard more than any other player in five year history of Prep Hoops Iowa, and we’re going to write about him a ton more this winter. He’ll string together games like this on a routine basis this season.
JD Stout, Keota — 40 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists
Stout, a junior, has already established himself as one of the state’s elite scorers, and he got his season off to a big start. We’re guessing this won’t be the first time he drops 40 on an opponent this season. This 40-point game came in a win over Lone Tree; he was 12-17 from the floor, 5-7 from deep.
Parker Rochford, Edgewood-Colesburg — 51 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 steals
Rochford became the first player in Iowa to drop 50 in a game, and although it’s always impressive to do that, his came in unusual circumstances. His team beat MFL-Mar-Mac on Monday night in four overtimes. In those four OTs, Rochford fired 42 shot-attempts (14-42), that’s more shots than we’ve ever seen an Iowa high school player shoot in one game.
Jake Hilmer, North Linn — 22 points, 16 assists, 4 steals
Here’s a guy who’s probably made these lists more than any other player in Iowa over the past few seasons. It’s the assists that make this performance special, the 16 helpers is the most so far from any player in Iowa. It’s still early, so Hilmer has plenty of time to keep setting a new assists high for the season.
Brennan Sefrit, Bedford — 11 points, 10 steals, 5 rebounds, 5 assists
We call this a quadruple-nickel, it’s when a guy notches five or more in four different statistical categories. It falls squarely into the “stat-stuffer” category. This performance from the senior guard came during a 72-20 shellacking of Essex.
Angelo Winkel, Bishop Garrigan — 22 points, 15 rebounds, 10 blocks
The blocks are the story here, Winkel — a sophomore who is receiving early high-major interest — sent away 10 shots in a win against Belmond-Klemme last week. Not lost on us is the efficient 10-14 shooting. And 15 rebounds is nothing to take lightly either.
