Preseason All-Conference: MVC Mississippi
Player of the Year: 2019 Noah Carter, Dubuque Senior
The future Northern Iowa Panther is not only the best player in this division, but one of the best in the state, period. One of the most versatile scorers the state has seen in a while, he’s capable of dominating in the paint, and he’s one of the best shooters around. Look for Carter to put up monster numbers for the Rams, our preseason No. 1 team in Class 4A.
First Team
2019 Noah Carter, Dubuque Senior (18.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.0 blocks, 59.1 FG%, 52.4 3P%)
Carter went through a real scare last year when he was sidelined following surgery for compartment syndrome in his leg. He came back and was just as dominant as ever, maybe even more so. He’s coming off one of the best summers anyone in the state had with the Barnstormers, looking more explosive than ever. He’s improved tremendously throughout his high school career, and he’ll put up huge numbers, with fantastic efficiency, for the team we expect to be the best in 4A.
2019 Tyrese Nickelson, Waterloo East (21.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.0 steals, 64 3PM)
Nickelson survived a scare of his own a few years ago, surviving a stabbing. He’s been one of the MVC’s best scorers for the past two years, and he’ll likely end up leading the division in scoring again this season. He has “in the gym” range and a pretty stroke. Look for him to have a few 40 point nights this winter.
2019 Keegan Murray, Cedar Rapids Prairie (12.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 88.2 FT%)
The first of the Murray twins to be named to the first team, Keegan ranked second on the team in scoring last year, behind only brother Kris. Coming off a strong summer with the Barnstormers, look for him to improve his efficiency a bit this year with plenty of returnees for the Hawks. He shot just 39.7% from the floor last year, but he’s too good of a shooter to keep that number – I expect to see that closer to 45% this winter.
2019 Kris Murray, Cedar Rapids Prairie (16.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.2 blocks, 90.4 FT%)
Kris led the Hawks in scoring and was second in rebounding last season. At 6-6, he can get his shot off whenever he wants, and he’s one of the best in the state at icing away games late with that 90.4% from the free throw line.
2019 Logan Wolf, Cedar Falls (13.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.8 steals, 1.1 blocks, 56.7 FG%)
Arguably the best perimeter defender in the state, Wolf is going to play both football and basketball at Northern Iowa. He was AJ Green’s running mate last year, and the Tigers are his team this time around. He should be great for the defending champions on both ends of the floor.
