Recruiting Update: Eric Rivers, The Heir to Jr. Clay at McCallie (2021)
McCallie point guard Eric Rivers, heir to Jr. Clay, brought a a handful of evaluating college coaches.
Junior Clay begins his Tennessee Tech career this fall after spearheading departed McCallie Head Coach John Shulman’s program the past two years.
Clay is gone and the point guard position needs filling. Shannon Walker, a Class of 2019 dual-sport athlete, provides physical defense. His scoring will be a drop off from Clay.
Enter sophomore Eric Rivers. June was an exceptional scoring month for Rivers. College coaches are already aware of the talented Rivers before he even starts a high school Varsity game.
Tuesday Berry College watched McCallie work out.
“Berry College came by today and VMI is coming Friday,” shared Eric Rivers Tuesday evening.
Bluntly as good as Berry College is they are going to witness extreme recruiting competition for the soon to blossom Rivers.
A week ago Gardner-Webb dropped by the impeccably pristine McCallie School campus at the football of Chattanooga’s eastern ridge.
Head Coach Tim Craft leads Gardner-Webb. His current run includes four-straight winning seasons, which is the longest stretch since the program’s move to Division I, and three consecutive trips to the Big South Conference tournament semifinals.
Historically Gardner-Webb is a low-performing program. Coach Craft, a Tallahassee-native, is changing that identity.
Gardner-Webb has gone 74-60 over the past four seasons, including 41 wins in Big South Conference action – and wins over Power Five programs Clemson, Purdue and Nebraska.
Despite his unproven high school legacy Eric Rivers has the kind of scoring potential to chase school records by graduation.
