Prospect Spotlight: Sam Skaar (2021)
As a freshman with Roland-Story, 6-foot-4 guard Sam Skaar started to make his mark. Now an experienced sophomore, he could be one of a handful of Class of 2021 guys who will breakout this high school season.
A tall and rangy sharpshooter, Skaar is known for his shooting prowess. And should have some improved defense to showcase this winter, too.
“My strength is definitely being a shooter. I like to get the ball on the outside. I’ve been working a lot on a lot of different jump-shots, too,” said Skaar.
“Defense is especially something I’m working to improve. Not necessarily being in the right spot, but foot speed and movement, and cutting my guy off from a drive.”
This spring and summer, Skaar was a member of one of Iowa’s best 15U programs, Kingdom Hoops Elite, and also was active with his Roland-Story squad playing in team camps. Things started off rocky for him, but got better during the latter half of the offseason.
“It started off pretty slow, I wasn’t hitting a lot of shots and things weren’t working for me,” said Skaar. “So I just got back in the gym a little bit more and worked on repetitive shooting and stuff like that. I worked on my form and one I corrected that the season started coming together.”
Skaar added: “AAU-wise, our team kind of came together, we didn’t really know who were were, we had a new coach for the first time, we were just trying to figure things out; and once we did, everything blended pretty well and we worked well as a team.”
In just two months, Skaar’s sophomore season with the Norseman will begin. As a freshman, he played in 15 games with the varsity and averaged 3.3 points per game for a team that won eight games.
Plenty of talent returns this season for Roland-Story.
“We’re a guard-based team. We’ll need to move the ball, pass the ball, shoot the ball well,” said Skaar. “And that’s what this team does, and we took a lot of big steps this summer.”
Over the course of the next year, Skaar says a goal of his is to earn a scholarship and gain some more exposure.
You can see him at the Prep Hoops Iowa Top 250 Expo at Kingdom Courts next weekend, Saturday, Sept. 29.
