Recruiting Report: Brad Winter (2019)
Winona won eight games a year ago, but could take a big step forward this winter. Having a big man like Brad Winter means the foundation is there for success.
Winter, a 6-foot-6 senior, averaged 12 points per game as a junior with the Winhawks, emerging as a viable interior presence and bright spot in a season mired in upheaval.
Winter spent the grassroots season playing with Minnesota Select, where he had a chance to play against top-flight competition every weekend. And he was productive.
“I think the AAU season went well,” said Winter. “I got to play with a bunch of guys that I’m pretty close with now. I think just playing better competition in AAU really helped me out.”
Winter’s game isn’t complex. He sets good screens, he runs the floor, he hangs around the rim, readily available for dump offs or put backs and he plays solid defense. He’s a solid mid-range shooter as well. He sticks to his strengths and does a good job filling his role. With long arms and a wiry frame, Winter makes an impact without requiring a lot of touches.
“Defense is the most important thing and I feel like that’s my strong suit,” said Winter. “I rebound, box out and just focus on doing the little things. My offense is alright but it’s getting better.”
The Winona big man played well over the summer and that combined with his resume for productivity in a strong Big 9 Conference has lead to a lot of interest at the college level.
“College ball is the main goal for me,” Winter said. “I’ve visited Augsburg, Hamline and have an offer from Waldorf. I’ve also heard from Platteville and Eau Claire.”
