Prospect Spotlight: Dylan Johnson (2021)
Soon, the Class of 2021 rankings will be unveiled, and Western Dubuque’s 6-foot-6 small forward Dylan Johnson will definitely find himself on that exclusive, initial list.
With great size and an ability to produce from anywhere on the floor, the sophomore prospect is without question one of the more intriguing players coming through the ranks of Iowa high school hoops.
“I think I’m best at shooting; I can do it off the dribble and then also I can go down low and post up smaller people and finish at the rim,” said Johnson.
“I also think I’m pretty good at passing for being a bigger guy. I can help my team out with that.”
Johnson spent his spring and summer playing with one of the more deep and talented grassroots squads in the Midwest, Martin Brothers 15U.
“Things went really well, some of us have been together since sixth grade, so we really work well together,” said Johnson. “And off the court, I got to know everyone a lot more, so that helped us on the court.”
With his sophomore season at Western Dubuque just two months away, Johnson is eager to get back on the floor and prove that he’s no inexperienced freshman anymore.
“Last year, I didn’t play much varsity at the beginning of the year, but towards the end, I did. I was glad I got the opportunity to do that. I’ve just been working hard and we’ve got a new coach and he expects a lot from me this year,” said Johnson.
“I plan on starting and being one of the top leaders on the team this season, and just helping guys out with everything.”
It’s still very early in his high school career, but Johnson’s recruitment is off to a promising start. He’s fielded letters from UNI, Drake, Augustana and Iowa.
“I hope to become a better player all-around over the next year,” said Johnson. “And also to get some more colleges looking at me and get my first offers.”
