We’ll identify a couple match-ups that are interesting to watch heading into the 2nd round that’ll be played mostly tomorrow.
Class 3A
There were two upsets in Class 3A and one was an 8 seed when Iowa knocked off Eunice. They had beat them earlier in the season as well. The other was the 20 seed Glen Oaks who traveled to Jennings and got a win.
10 E.D. White @ 7 De La Salle. De La Salle has had a great season behind a talented group of underclassmen and will host an E.D. White squad that has some equally impressive wins.
Players to Watch – Kevin Johnson (6’0 PG, EDW, 2017), David Williams (6’6 F, DLS, 2017)
11 Albany @ 6 Carroll. Albany has a veteran team that lost in ceremonial fashion last season in the 2nd round. Carroll has bounced back after a 2nd round ousting last season as well.
Players to Watch – Dylan Hoyt (6’2 G, Albany, 2016), Larry Owens (6’8 F/C, Carroll, 2017)
Class 4A
Class 4A only saw one upset but it was a big one as the 26th seed Opelousas traveled north to get a big win over the 7 seeded Tioga team that was gearing up for a run with a group of seniors.
15 St. Martinville @ 2 Washington-Marion. St. Martinville got a 56-49 win at home against Washington-Marion earlier in the season and look for the upset again on the road this time.
Players to Watch – Javante Walker (6’7 F, St. Martinville, 2016), Christian Edwards (6’4 F, W-M, 2017)
9 Plaquemine @ 8 Northside. Both teams were ranked higher throughout the year but took losses late in the season that hurt. Northside would love another shot against rival STM in next round.
Players to Watch – Kirkland Jones (6’2 G/F, Plaquemine, 2016), Brandon Ellis (6’0 PG, Northside, 2016)
Class 5A
The class with the most lower seeds winning was 5A with 3 different teams winning on the road. Bonnabel went across town to beat East St. John, Chalmette traveled to beat Walker, and Central Lafourche traveled up north to beat Southwood. The theme in the 2nd round and beyond is nobody is safe at this point; this class is loaded and it’s sure to be a fun ride.
1 Natchitoches Central @ 17 Chalmette. NCHS brings it’s vaunted defense to town to play against Chalmette. Two of the state’s top juniors go at it in what could be a potential upset to watch.
Players to Watch – Brandon Rachal (6’4 G/F, NCHS, 2017), Mitchell Robinson (7’0 F/C, Chalmette, 2017, Texas A&M)
3 Landry-Walker @ 19 Bonnabel. A district match-up that could be another top team having to travel in round 2 and face a tough team that just didn’t seed well. Loads of talent to watch here.
Players to Watch – Lamar Peters (6’0 PG, LW, 2016, Miss St), Joseph Thompson (6’9 F, Bonnabel, 2017)
13 East Ascension @ 4 St. Pauls. SPS has extended it’s season winning streak to 31 games but takes on an EA team that has the size and scoring ability to play toe for toe with them.
Players to Watch – LeAaron Cain (6’2 SG, EA, 2017), Harrison Prieto (6’7 F/C, SPS, 2016)
