The schedule was full of playoff teams and athletes who have proven with their play they deserve a look. Three games on tab to watch that provided a couple new prospects to keep an eye on for different levels.
Amite vs Ascension Catholic
Amite is traditionally a tough 3A team full of athletes and this years roster did not let us down. Off a disappointment in the playoffs that saw them have to forfeit a game deep in the playoffs, their athletes are ready to prove themselves. 2017 G Devonta Smith of Amite is one of the top athletes in the state on the gridiron and already has an offer to LSU for football. In basketball, he put up a smooth 26 with numerous dunks.
For Ascension Catholic, the name to know is Kaleb Winchester. Despite being only 5’4 at PG, he has scored over 1600 points in his career and added nearly 20 again yesterday despite a rough shooting night. He’s an adept passer with great balance with the ball in his hands. There should be a home for him in NAIA-D3 basketball.
Walker vs French Settlement
The Walker Wildcats 2018 class is promising for sure. Whether that is point guard Dalton Moore (6’2) who had 23 with ease while running grabbing a handful of assists or Darius Hampton (5’11 PG) who can play on or off the ball, there is a bright future. 2018 F Jalen Perkins showed off his budding athleticism with a big dunk in transition as well. Walker coasted to a 69-49 win over French Settlement.
For FSHS, it is their lone senior Jarrett Lobell (5’10 G) who is tasked with making things happen for them. 2018 SG Brayden Aime finished with 5 made 3s and 18 total to help keep it respectable for the Lions.
Albany vs Lutcher
Albany is one of the more physical teams in the state and have a ton of experience. They were led by 2016 6’2 G Dylan Hoyt (26 points, 5 made 3s) and 2017 5’11 G Sean Sykes (29 points, 5 made 3s). Both have the ability to play NAIA or D3 basketball with the ability to score from outside and the explosiveness to finish inside. Both could man either guard spot and defend with length and quickness.
The 11 made 3s by Albany wasn’t enough as Lutcher hit 14 of their own and are looking to make a run in 3A after their football title. They are deeper than most teams and have shooting and athletes across the board. While they lack a true big man, their ability to get up and down the court make them a tough match-up. Leading scorers were as follows: Brendon Taylor (14 points, 3 made 3s), Tariq Belvin (21 points, 4 made 3s), Jontre Kirklin (13 points), Jaylon Wingate (14 points, 4 made 3s).
