Prospect Spotlight: Sayvion Armstrong (2019)
Sioux City East was one of the best teams in Iowa this season, and it’s rare that sophomores get the opportunity to flourish on such talented teams.
That’s what 5-foot-10 guard Sayvion Armstrong did though for the Black Raiders this past winter.
It was his ability to play fast and to defend that allowed him to make such an impact as an underclassmen.
“What I’m best at is playing defense and being able to push the ball of the floor, and playing with ease,” said Armstrong. “We thrive on getting stops and moving the ball as quick as possible, and I think that’s why I fit in so well.”
What was most impressive, is that Armstrong swiped 1.3 steals per game while playing off the bench for the Black Raiders. He credits quickness and instincts for his defensive prowess.
“I’m really quick and I’m quick with my hands. I have a good sense of where the ball is going before it gets there, so I’m good at getting into the passing lanes before the ball gets to the opponent,” said Armstrong.
He also averaged 4.6 points and 1.6 assists per game this season on his state-qualifying team.
“My role was to come off the bench and bring intensity, control the ball and push it as fast as possible,” said Armstrong.
Sayvion Armstrong is ranked by Prep Hoops as a top 90 prospect in his class. To see the full ranking of Iowa’s 2020 class, click here.
Now, with his 16U season ahead of him, Armstrong is eager to get out with his guys on Sioux City Bombers and turn some heads.
“I’m really looking forward to the AAU season, and just traveling around and playing fast. And playing against as many guys as I can that are better than me, and just trying to get better myself,” said Armstrong, who says his recruitment has yet to begin.
“That’s nothing that’s started up yet. But right now, I’m just playing and playing and waiting to see what happens.”
