The Philly Catholic League season tipped off on Friday night with an action-packed slate of seven games, none bigger than the defending champion Father Judge playing host to perennial power Archbishop Wood. The visitors pulled out a thrilling win thanks to a game-winner in the final minute by senior [player_tooltip player_id='2121579' first='Brian' last='Donahue']. Junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='2206834' first='Caleb' last='Lundy'] and senior guard Brady Macadams (Marist) led with 15 points apiece, while Temple signee [player_tooltip player_id='1611959' first='Derrick' last='Morton-Rivera'] paced Judge with a game-high 17.

Donahue often flies under the radar when discussing the array of talent at Wood's disposal, as the senior swingman has gradually worked his way up the program to earn his role as a valued starter and consistent contributor for the first time as a senior. Playing against several of his AAU teammates, he made the difference in the game on Friday night, as the sharpshooter scored all nine of his points on a trio of second-half 3s, none bigger than a confident spotup to break a 58-58 tie with under 30 seconds remaining. Donahue's shooting ability combined with the big-game experience he'll acquire over the course of the PCL gauntlet should make him a coveted small-college recruit throughout the winter, with scholarship-level attention in the realm of possibility should he opt to pursue a prep year.

One of the most dynamic lead guards in the region, Lundy was uncharacteristically quiet for much of the game but stepped up when it mattered most in the fourth quarter to help secure the win. A lanky guard still growing into a quickly-evolving body, he scored nine of his 15 points in the final frame, highlighted by a pair of tough driving finishes through traffic, including one of the and-one variety. Lundy was effective throughout as a facilitator, consistently setting up his shooters when he attracted extra defensive attention off the dribble. He would also ice the game at the foul line, calmly knocking down a pair while nursing a one-possession lead in the final seconds. The South Jersey native holds a handful of mid-major offers while continuing to trend toward high-major territory.

One of the top returning scorers in the league, Macadams got his senior PCL campaign off to a solid start with a 15-point effort to help key the road win. The Marist pledge scored all but two of his points in a big first half, helping the Vikings establish an early lead that they would hold for much of the game. Macadams knocked down a trio of shots from beyond the arc with steely confidence that's become common for him, before getting the fans out of their seats with an explosive alley-oop finish in transition. His scoring ability and tough-nosed approach should translate nicely to the MAAC before too long.

Among the favorites for league and state player of the year honors, Morton-Rivera continued working back from an early-season ankle injury with a workmanlike 17-point effort. Known as a sharpshooter from the perimeter, the Temple signee mixed it up impressively as his shooting stroke abandoned him for the night. Instead, he was consistently effective working to his spots downhill, whether to find a seam to finish or to draw contact and get himself to the foul line. As always, he brought a steady competitive spirit and smart, unselfish decisionmaking throughout.

An emerging member of the Wood rotation after playing mostly JV as a freshman, Powell had arguably the best game of his young career in undoubtedly the biggest environment he's seen thus far. He helped set the tone with seven first-quarter points, establishing himself early as a threat from beyond the arc to set up his dynamic downhill slashing as the game progressed. While he projects long-term as a lead guard, Powell thrived playing off-ball, attacking tilted defenses in order to collapse the paint and make plays both for himself and others. He also played spirited defense throughout while applying consistent ball pressure across the backcourt. Look for Powell to continue emerging as the next in a long line of D1 guards to come out of Wood in the past decade.

Already an experienced multi-year starter despite being just a junior, Tyler was clearly comfortable in the big-game atmosphere as he scored a crucial 15 points to help lead Judge. The well-built utility guard was key toward keeping the Crusaders within striking distance as he scored 12 of his 15 points in the opening half. Known as a dangerous shotmaker from deep, he knocked down a trio of 3s while also picking up scraps inside the arc using his strength and instincts for the ball. His collection of translatable winning traits make for a safe projection to the scholarship-level when the time comes.

One of the marks of a great player can be their ability to impact a game without scoring, and Jenkins was crucial throughout the game despite a quiet night offensively. Among the higher-end defensive prospects in the class nationally, the lanky fly-swatter was consistently effective patrolling the paint, blocking a pair of shots (and altering countless others) while hauling in nine rebounds. His ability to remain a factor out to the perimeter while contending with Judge's guard-heavy 5-out attack was also particularly noteworthy. Offensively, he crushed an early lob to help set the tone before contributing a pair of crucial fourth-quarter buckets out of the pick-and-roll. Jenkins' multifaceted two-way impact make it clear why he's being coveted at the highest levels of college basketball despite still being a work in progress on the offensive end.

Considered by many to be the top long-term prospect among the Philly-area freshman class, Brown has the benefit of coming along slowly while playing a bench role in a lineup full of experienced upperclassmen. Still feeling the effects of an offseason shoulder injury, he had something of a coming-out party in front of the standing-room on Friday night, playing extended minutes in the second half and gaining confidence seemingly with each possession. Brown only scored 5 points but they came at critical junctures of the game. He showed confidence as a floor-spacer out to the arc, flashed the ability to create his own shot as a slasher, and thrived as a timely cutter and ball-mover in a way you don't often see from such young prospects with his natural talent level. The flashes should only get more frequent as the season progresses, with the lanky swingman having a chance to break out on the recruiting scene as soon as this coming grassroots season.
