PIERRE MITCHELL (2018, PG, DEPSA)
Mitchell was a steady leader for DEPSA throughout the playoffs providing motivation and performance. In the semifinals against Grand Rapids Covenant Christian he chipped in with 13 points. The championship game against Maple City Glen Lake was a prime example of what Mitchell meant to the DEPSA team. He had 17 points, with 14 of them being in the 3rd quarter. It was Mitchell’s huge 3rd quarter that sparked a critical run by DEPSA.
Pierre Mitchell could be counted on in the playoffs and regular season. He’s a steady floor leader and his teammates knew he’d step up in big moments. Mitchell is an A+ decision maker, especially under pressure. He’s physically strong, a good athlete, and an excellent passer. Mitchell is a good on ball defender who can make opponents uncomfortable with his pressure defense.
Honorable Mention
Gary Solomon (2018, SG, DEPSA)
He was steady as can be throughout the playoffs. Solomon had 15 points and 10 rebounds in the semis and 16 points in the title game. Even on a team loaded with talent, he was a relied upon scorer. Solomon is strong and can score in almost any way. He’s a stat sheet stuffer that contributes in multiple fashions.
Deante Johnson (2018, F, DEPSA)
Johnson notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the championship game. This was typical of his production over the course of the season and playoffs. Johnson is a versatile athlete who can be put anywhere on the floor. The Cleveland State commit is long, athletic, and plays above the rim. Defensively, he has great agility and is a rim protector.
Carson Meulenberg (2018, F, Covenant Christian)
Meulenberg had 12 points and 12 rebounds in a semifinal loss to DEPSA. He was relied upon to score and rebound throughout the playoffs. Meulenberg has a solid mid range jumpshot and has nice touch around the rim. He’s a strong defender who uses his size and athleticism.
Xander Okerlund (2019, G, Maple City Glen Lake)
Okerlund is a star on the rise. He had 17 points and 9 rebounds in the championship game loss to DEPSA. Okerlund is a prolific scorer with unlimited range. He should be considered one of the best scorers in Michigan. Okerlund proved throughout the playoffs that he’s a much improved rebounder as well.
