On Tuesday and Wednesday (7/1-7/2) of last week, I attended the All Academic Showcase at Babson College in Wellesley, MA. There were 400+ players there and 5 courts going on at once, so it was impossible for me to see/scout every team and player. I'll be having coverage of the event throughout this week, highlighting some players who played well and probably helped their college recruitment.

Kmetz is only a rising junior but has a very strong body for a 6-foot-3 guard. He can handle it in transition and the half court but knows when to slow down and use his change-of-pace as opposed to his quickness. The lefty has an awesome spin move in the lane which got tons of defenders on their heels and he was able to finish amongst the trees because of his strength, control, and willingness to get to two feet. I don't know what his outside shot looks like, but he's shaping up to be a really nice D3 player in a couple years.

Newmeyer is a 6-foot-4 slasher who does an excellent job cutting off the ball and finding seams in the defense for easy layups. He knows what he's going to do with the rock before it comes to him, and he makes smart, under control decisions once he punctures the paint. He also has some handle to his game and a bunch of nice finishing moves at the hoop. He's only a rising junior but should have D3 schools all over him in short order. If he grows and gets even stronger, he could even go higher than that. This will be a huge year for both his physical and on-court development.

Green has a nice rhythm and jumpy-ness to his game and uses his first-step/quickness to get into the lane quite effectively. He can shoot the ball from three, from the mid range, and he has some nice finishing touch in the lane. He also makes good decisions for his teammates in transition and in the half court, though he would do well by over-dribbling a bit less and getting off the ball quicker. Once he's in the right situation and system at the D3 level, those skills will come. Probably a mid-level D3 guy somewhere, unless he grows more in the next year.

Broddason is an intriguing long term prospect because of his combination of size and athleticism off the bounce. He has really solid explosiveness off the dribble (a great first-step), and he's so strong on drives that people bounce right off of him. He needs to learn to make better decisions once he gets into the paint, but that'll come with time. The physical tools, effort, intangibles, etc. are already there, and he has two more years of high school and AAU ball to figure out the rest. You can see the beginning stages of him being a really nice plug-and-play guy for a D3 squad.

Weeresinghe scored in a variety of ways on Wednesday when I watched his last game of the showcase. He consistently carved out space at the nail and in the paint, and then went to his spin move on numerous occasions, showcasing some really nice finishes on both sides of the hoop. I didn't see him shoot the ball too much, but he appears to have a nice-looking release so my guess is that he's a pretty good shooter. Looking forward to seeing his development this season with Dexter Southfield, where he comes in as a transfer from Newton South High School.
