Recruiting Report: Joe Weber (2018)
The time has come for Boyer Valley’s scoring extraordinaire Joe Weber to start thinking about his college decision, and good news for him, he’s got options.
The 5-foot-8 point guard has two local small schools that have been seriously recruiting him for some time now, and another Southern Iowa NAIA that has recently gotten into the mix.
“Central and Briar Cliff have been recruiting me a lot and lately I’ve been talking to Graceland, and they want me to come down for a visit,” said Weber.
“I’d like to make a decision fairly soon, but my recruitment is still open, I haven’t made any decisions yet, for sure. But, hopefully I can decide here soon.”
Weber has been one of the state’s more steady scorers since he started his career as a freshman; but his scoring is actually down this season as a senior — he’s been focusing more on distributing to his teammates.
“I think one of the biggest things I’ve continued to improve is my ability to get my teammates open shots. This year, I haven’t had to score as much as in the past, which is nice. I’ve been able to move the ball around the floor a lot more and get my teammates open shots,” said Weber.
“Just being able to run our offense and lead the team is the biggest thing I’ve been working on. And then I’ve been trying to work on a mid-range game, obviously at the next level, with my size, it’s not going to be very easy to get to the hoop. So, being able to hit the mid-range jump-shot is a big thing.”
Under Weber’s veteran leadership, Boyer Valley raced out to an 8-2 start this season, and have overcome a couple early hiccups to hit their stride as they approach the midway mark of the season.
“We started with a couple of tough losses, and that was disappointing because I think both we should’ve won,” said Weber. “But, the thing I like about our team is we didn’t get down after that, we knew we had a lot of games ahead of us, and we kept playing and hot on a hot streak.”
As for his college decision, the idea is to have a school selected before the postseason begins.
“I’d probably like to make my decision before the season ends, but you just really never know,” said Weber. “But, it’d be nice to get it out of the way before the season ends.”
