WAVERLY -- In a game featuring a player who went for 27 points and another who went for 35 points and 19 rebounds, it was 5-9 senior guard Paxten McHone who ended up being the hero for Jesup, helping lift the J-Hawks to the Class 2A state tournament with a steal and free throw with 2.7 seconds left to play, giving Jesup a 57-56 win over previously undefeated North Fayette Valley.

Jesup took a 15-11 lead after the first quarter before North Fayette Valley star [player_tooltip player_id='1951832' first='Cael' last='Reichter'] really got things going. The TigerHawks outscored Jesup 18-8 in the second quarter behind 15 points from Reichter, giving them a 29-23 lead at the break. In the second half, both teams stars, [player_tooltip player_id='1839807' first='Ryan' last='Treptow'] and Reichter, started to get into foul trouble, which ultimately helped decide this game.

North Fayette Valley led by four, 52-48, with 1:26 remaining. Treptow (pictured) got to the bucket and finished, plus the foul, cutting it to a a 1-point deficit. The foul was Reichter's 4th. After Reichter went 2-2 at the free-throw line on the ensuing possession, Treptow stepped into a 3 in transition to tie it up at 54 with 58.7 seconds left. Decklyn Heins gave the TigerHawks the lead back with a bucket at the rim, but on the next Jesup possession Reichter was called for a questionable 5th foul out near the mid-court stripe, fouling him out of the game. Treptow stepped up to the line and made both free throws to tie that game at 56 with 21.6 seconds to play.

On the next North Fayette Valley possession, McHone came away with a steal and raced down the floor. He was fouled with 2.7 seconds left and stepped to the line. He missed the first, made the second, and a desperation heave from [player_tooltip player_id='2511611' first='Kyler' last='White'] hit the back of the rim and bounced away, sending Jesup to the state tournament. The J-Hawks will be the #8 seed in the tournament and will have a date with defending 2A champion Western Christian in the quarterfinals.

[player_tooltip player_id='1839807' first='Ryan' last='Treptow'] had 27 points in the win, the lone J-Hawk to finish in double-figures. [player_tooltip player_id='1951832' first='Cael' last='Reichter'] led North Fayette Valley with 35 points and 19 rebounds before fouling out.

Treptow had his work cut out for him trying to keep pace with Reichter, and he did a pretty darn good job, delivering big bucket after big bucket for the J-Hawks. A strong, long guard who can score from all three levels, he shoots it well off both the dribble and the catch, and he does a nice job using the threat of his jumper to open up the rest of his game. He even got a shot at Reichter defensively, holding his own against the big 6-8 standout on the block. He had 27 points on 9-17 shooting with 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Vogel provides some secondary perimeter scoring for the J-Hawks. He can attack the rim off the dribble or shoot it from the 3-point line off the catch. He provides some versatility on the defensive end as well with his lateral movement and length.

The 6-4 sophomore big man had his work cut out for him trying to help slow down Reichter, and he ultimately fouled out, but he showed some real flashes of his potential on both ends of the floor. He has good mobility and can block shots defensively. On the offensive end he has good hands, soft touch, and developing footwork on the block. He finished with 7 points on 3-5 shooting, 6 rebounds, and a block, and he'll be the focal point of the J-Hawks starting next season.

Reichter closed out his ridiculously productive career with another huge game, scoring 35 points on 13-21 shooting and grabbing 19 rebounds. At 6-8, he has great mobility, rotates well defensively and blocks shots at a high rate, and he is tremendous as a rebounder on both ends of the floor. He plays with physicality, has a great second and third jump that he uses to tap the ball a few times before being able to finally corral it, and great hands. Having grown up as a point guard before going through a growth spurt, he handles it really, really well for a 6-8 big man, and that allows him to initiate the offense and play downhill off the dribble when he isn't posting up defenders.

A big, physical forward with soft hands and good touch around the rim, Heins had 7 points on 3-7 shooting to go with 6 rebounds and a pair of assists. He had what could have been the game-winning bucket for the TigerHawks, a tough finish from a difficult angle.
