Day 1 at the Dome: Game MVPs
Holt didn’t put up massive numbers in the win over Federal Way, but he had a clear impact...
Holt was able to put stats up across the board and was a very efficient player throughout the day. In his opening game, he totaled 4 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block, showcasing how he can affect the game all around. And as the day went on, his playmaking continued to flash more and more, and he ended the day with a 10-point six-rebound game, chipping in two assists, a steal and a block.
He has the strength to hold his defender at bay but also has shown the creativity, vision, patience, and ball handling to play a unique role at his size. He shot 57.1% from the field (8-for-14), and really only took one jump-shot the entire day. Even that was a short jumper in the paint. It is pretty telling that he can be such an effective playmaker in this setting without stretching the floor.
Holt played a big part in getting Lincoln to the 3A state title game this past winter, and really seemed to get on a roll late in that high school season. He’s continued to find success over the summer and picked up three division one offers in June. First from Virginia, then Bethune Cookman, and finally from Washington State. His size, skill, and physicality will continue to give the Abes a unique look in their front court as they get ready to make another run in the 3A this winter.
The play finisher for Select 16 U in their Friday evening win, Holt’s life was made easy by his teammates as he scored from the baseline with easy layups off drives from his guard teammates. A physical wing, Holt blended his strength and natural physicality with an understanding of how to play, going through defenders at the rim without taking wild shots at the basket. Holt provides a different dynamic to a Select 16 U team that’s one of the best on the PRO16 circuit.
Holt was a key figure in helping Lincoln get back to their first title game since 2002, when his father helped the Abes win the second of back-to-back titles. Although the Abes came up just short this time, Holt has been instrumental in their run this season. As their lone big man at the tournament, he finished top-10 in steals, blocks, and rebounds, while averaging double figures offensively. And he was consistent throughout the tourney, scoring at least nine points and grabbing at least seven rebounds each game. Don’t be surprised if these Abes find a way back to the title game next year too.
Holt has been in a groove since the district playoffs, and his play has been instrumental to the Abes’ run to the semifinals. He started the game off with a big block trailing the play, and continued to show his physicality around the rim with some second-effort finishes, and some impressive plays in transition.
Holt played the post role for his Lincoln Abes and caught some attention at the state tournament for his play inside. He’s a tough rebounder, defender, and ended up drawing quite a few fouls during the tournament too. But Holt has a lot more to his game that should start to show up next season. Catch him during the AAU season and you’ll see the big man has some handle and downhill ability to his game, and with his strength he’s able to get to the rim consistently and show off some sneaky athleticism and touch.
Holt didn’t put up massive numbers in the win over Federal Way, but he had a clear impact across the board and was a key anchor for them inside. He racked up five points, five rebounds, four blocks, and two assists to help the Abes advance, and he also made a bunch of smart plays with the rock around the paint, mixing headiness and hustle to make a big impression on the game.
