Player of the Week: PJ Rundquist (Week 2)
PJ RUNDQUIST (2019)
5’10 G, Wapsie Valley
Few players in the state are more skilled than Wapsie Valley junior guard PJ Rundquist. We’ve seen that first-hand the past two summers on the grassroots circuit with Iowa Mavericks, and simply put: he’s just fun to watch.
Rundquist has a smooth-ness to his game, a fluidity that you only see in a select few players, — the best of the best — so it’s really no surprise that he’s spent the first two weeks of his junior season utterly dominating the competition.
Last week, in three wins, Rundquist went for 100 points, that’s 33.3 per, and canned 16 3s in the process. He’ll do that. The highlight game was a 43 point effort in a 80-75 win over Denver.
If we’re going to draw comparisons here, Rundquist reminds us a little bit of last season’s Iowa Mr. Basketball, Joe Smoldt (currently at D2 Upper Iowa); smooth, skilled, innate ability.
The Warriors are 5-0 this season, and with Rundquist’s guidance, could position themselves to have a shot at playing at Wells Fargo Arena come March. Then the stage would be set for one of the state’s most impressive guards to showcase his immense talent.
